Overview

The Joomla! Content Management System (CMS) being utilized by the School allows content managers to
manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from their website.

The software takes the content that is entered, compiles it and displays it within the School’s look and feel, so
that the website is updated instantly. If you can use a word processing application then you can use the Joomla
CMS. Today’s training will cover what you need to know to get started. If you haven’t been trained on
something in Joomla, even if it looks easy to use, don’t use it.

Overview of steps to build a Web page:

    1. Write and edit content. Follow writing for the Web guidelines.
    2. Copy text to Notepad, found in your PC start menu. Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
    3. Find and prepare photographs. Follow preparing photos guidelines.
    4. Log in and upload photos and documents (Word, PDF) to Media Manager.
    5. Open current or new content page in your section/category.
    6. Copy text from Notepad to Joomla page.
    7. Format text (headings and spacing, not font type or font size). Follow style guidelines.
    8. Add images and links, if desired.
    9. Check page in Internet Explorer and Firefox.
    10. Submit a help ticket to get a new page added to your menu.
                                            Joomla! Quick Start Manual

Step 1: Logging in, overview, navigating the work space

   1. Open Firefox and go to: http://publish.sph.unc.edu/.

   2. Enter your UNC Onyen and password in the login fields.

   3. Open Internet Explorer to view your pages at: http://www.sph.unc.edu/.

   4. From the main Joomla Control Panel, choose the Content Item Manager icon.

   5. Use the dropdowns to find your Section (1) and Category (2). You may also use the Filter (3) to find
      content by title.

   6. Choose a content item to edit by clicking on the content item’s Title. For training purposes, find a page
titled “Joomla training page” with your name in the Title.

  **Important Note**
Any Jooma user has access to anyone else’s content on the site. Thus, it is vital that you make changes only
to the pages you are directly responsible for.
                                             Joomla! Quick Start Manual

Step 2: Revising content – links, bookmarks, style, bullets, images, documents

   1. The page editor looks much like Microsoft Word. You will not use the right half of the screen, except
for the icons at the top.

   2. You may type in new text, delete text or make small amounts of text bold or italics. Here is where you
      add bullets and make links.

   3. You can change the page title here, but it will not change the page URL or the menu label.

     **Important Note**
       1) Don’t use the page editor to change fonts, font sizes, or styles for the text. These attributes
are dictated by the site’s STYLESHEET.

       2) Always remember to either Save or Close out of a Content Item that you are working on.
When you edit a Content Item, the item is CHECKED OUT and locked to prevent others
from overwriting you work. If you do not Save or Close out of a CHECKED OUT item, the
lock will remain in place and the file will only be accessible by the last person who opened
            it.
Step 3: Inserting Links, Bookmarks, or Linking to Documents
    1) You can add links to content in the Joomla! Content Item Manager by selecting either the “Hyperlink”
button or the “Link to Document” button.

                                                                                  Link to
                                                        Hyperlink Document

Hyperlink: Web Location
6) Select the HYPERLINK button. In the Hyperlink dialog box, select “Web location”. Enter the URL that
you wish to link to in the Address field. Joomla! gives you a PREVIEW button that you can use to
make sure your link is correct. Edit/enter the remaining fields:

                  i. Address Add a URL address.
ii. Title Add a link title.
iii. Window Select “open in a new window.”

Link to Document
7) Select the LINK TO DOCUMENT button. In the Link to Document dialog box, browse the Joomla!
Media Manager for the document that you wish to link to. Once you choose the document, Joomla!
will give you a preview of the document. If you need to, you can also load a document into Joomla!
   from this window.

Note: The default setting for the Window field will cause any document to open in a new window.
                                           Joomla! Quick Start Manual

Step 4: Adding Images to the Content
    1) You can add images that have been loaded through the Joomla! Media Manager to content in the
Joomla! Content Items Manager by selecting the “Insert/Edit an Image” button.
                              Insert/Edit an Image

   2) In the Select an Image dialog box, browse to the image that you wish to insert on the page.
                                        Joomla! Quick Start Manual

3) Select the Image. You will notice that after you select the image, information about the size of the
image will be displayed in the Image Information section.

4) Choose the “Next” button, which will allow you to change the layout of the image and add a caption.

 **Important Note**
Do not adjust width and height dimensions in Joomla! If the image requires resizing, please
prepare the image for the Web in Photoshop or similar photo editing software.

5) Choose “OK” when you’re done, and the image will be inserted onto the page.
                                               Joomla! Quick Start Manual

Step 5: Adding new content

   1) Edit/enter the content using the Joomla! Editor.

         i. Title Add a page title. Remember, this is the title that will appear
on the page and in the title bar of the browser – NOT the link
that appears in the site navigation menu.
ii. Section Select the section your content will be stored in.
iii. Category Select the category your content will be stored in.
iv. Text Add the content for your page; for example, text, images,
                                     tables, links, etc.

   2) Add content from Notepad only.

   3) Select the “Save” or “Apply” buttons in the top-right side of the page to save your changes.

What is the difference between Save and Apply?
Select SAVE to save changes and close the edit screen. Select APPLY to save work as you go along while you
continue editing. You should always save as you are working – it’s good practice. APPLY allows you to check your
edits on the site, while you continue to make changes.

Step 6: Joomla! Media Manager – Uploading Documents to Joomla!
    1) From the main Joomla! Control Panel, choose Media Manager from the Quick Link Icons, or choose
Site -> Media Manager from the Menu at the top of the screen.

   2) To find your content, browse from the main Media Manager directory to the stories directory. Once in
the stories directory, Content Manager’s should find folder space has already been created for them.
The directories are organized by Section, then by Category; and within each Category directory, there
are two directories: one for documents and one for images.
                                           Joomla! Quick Start Manual

Step 7: Uploading to the Joomla! Media Manager
    1) To upload new photos, browse to your appropriate directory in the Joomla! Media Manager.

   2) Choose the “Browse” button in the Media Manager.

   3) In the resulting “Browse to File” dialog box, browse to the file you would like to upload on your
computer and select it. You may upload images (.GIF, .JPG), Adobe PDF (.PDF), PowerPoint (.PPT), and
      Word documents (.DOC).

   4) The path of the file you selected should appear in the File Upload field in the Joomla! Media Manager.
If the path is correct, select the “Upload” button in the top-right side of the page to upload your
      selected file.

**Important Note**
 1) Files names can not contain spaces when you upload them. If your file name does contain
spaces, please correct the file name on your computer and follow the file upload process
again. DO NOT attempt to change the path of the file in the File Upload field.

 2) Files uploaded to Joomla! Media Manager require up to one hour to be transferred to
Production, and as a result will not show up immediately in Joomla!
                                            Joomla! Quick Start Manual

Step 8: Final step and menu changes
Once you have completed a portion of work, you will want to remember to choose the “Save” or “Apply”
buttons in the top-right side of the page to save your changes. Sometimes it may take up to ten minutes for
the page to appear correctly.

To add an item to the menu, e-mail chris.perry@unc.edu or submit a help ticket.

If you get stuck on anything, please click Feedback on the top of any web page. Scroll
