Help us lift awareness of tourism issues
and events by circulating this Mackay
Tourism Newsletter to your staff and
                                 business partners

INTRODUCING OUR REFRESHED TOURISM LOGO
To sharpen up our destination and corporate image, Mackay Tourism recently
commissioned MTL Member Red Hot Blue to re-work our logo, and the results
are shown here. The logo appearing on the masthead of this newsletter is the
Mackay Tourism corporate version, while seen to the left are our Mackay-Isaac
destination logo and our Mackay Convention Bureau logo. We’ve adopted
the tagline ‘Vibrant Spirit . Thriving Region’ which we believe more positively
and accurately describes our region, in place of the four year old ‘More than
Meets the Eye’ line. Usage of the destination logo by Members is much
encouraged, providing strict adherence to our style guide is observed.
We are progressively updating signage, display, website and collateral to
reflect the refreshed logo, and hope you will all help us by adding it to your
own material. We shall shortly be providing all members with new bumper
stickers to display. In the meantime, please call Hannah our digital marketing
executive on 4944 5811 or email if you would like a copy of the refreshed
Mackay-Isaac destination tourism logo.

GRANT APPLICATIONS – RESULTS AWAITED
Mackay Tourism is currently awaiting the results of several grant applications to
extend our work on behalf of our industry and community in the months
ahead. We have applied for Federal TQUAL funding from AusIndustry to
support signage and marketing of the Mining Trail tourist drive between
Clermont and Hay Point. We are also awaiting approvals for our annual core
funding grant from State Government (essential to ongoing operation of our
Visitor Information Centres and Destination Marketing Program). We’ve also
applied for State funding to support a Mackay Airport Passenger Survey, a
Hotel Demand and Investment Attraction Strategy, and a Mini-Mine (visitor
attraction/mine training) proposal. Positive funding announcements from
Federal and State Governments will enable us to progress these and other
important initiatives to help build visitation to our region.

VISITOR STATS FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2009
As expected, total overnight visitor statistics for the year ended 30 June
revealed a drop in domestic arrivals by 19%, and a growth in international
arrivals of 6%. Strongest performer was our Visiting Friends / Relatives segment
which was up by 21%. Only three of Queensland’s fourteen regions
experienced overall growth. Mackay region outperformed all others in room
occupancies, leading with 73.6%. Average domestic length of stay for the
year rose by 12%. As always, however, survey-based data should be read with
caution – trends are more important in assessing progress.

TOURISM WEEK PLANS WELL UNDERWAY
We’ve set the week commencing 22 March as Tourism Week in 2010, and
we’re hoping every member will play a part in raising community recognition
and support for the value of tourism right across our region. We shall really
welcome your ideas and support in drawing attention to our industry and the
economic diversity we bring to the region.
Dates locked in so far are:

which you can be involved and use our media sponsors and Tourism Week to
