INTIMATE & DISTANT LANDSCAPES
Intimate and Distant Landscapes presents works by a selection of established and mid-career Australian artists for
whom the process of painting emerges as a primary metaphor in evoking the nature of geographic experience.

Curated by Tasmanian artist, Anne Morrison, this superb exhibition taking place at the Devonport Regional Gallery
during Ten Days on the Island 2007 features paintings by Judy Watson, Jon Cattapan, Dorothy Napangardi,
Jonathan Kimberley and Sue Lovegrove. The exhibition will be a unique opportunity for the public to experience
significant, large-scale paintings which respond to issues surrounding the landscape and our contemporary
experience of it.

Whether from a personal, cultural, or historical perspective, a sense of place is evoked, encompassing both the near
and far, the micro and macro. Process becomes the central metaphor in creating, deciphering and experiencing the
work, as meaning becomes embedded within the graphic and fluid nature of the language the artists’ employ.

Such an approach to painting reveals an intimate sensory awareness of place visible within the tangible
archaeology of the paintings surface.

The paintings evoke the kind of sensitivities that can only be conveyed through a deeply personal and poetic
engagement with a familiar environment. It’s a deep-rooted impulse – of knowing, placing, unearthing unique and
often subtle relationships within the landscape.

As an event of the Ten Days Talks & Forums program, the curator, Anne Morrison and artist, Jon Cattapan, will
present Artist Floor Talks.
