          Order of Preference
•   A host address
•   A subnet
•   A summary route
•   A major network
•   A default route
   ip route destination mask next-hop

• Routers automatically know the directly
  connected address.
• Find the total number of networks
• Find how many are directly connected.
• Configure static routes for all others
           Summary Routes

• An address that can encompass several
  more specific addresses in the route table.
          Alternative Route
• For e.g. Configure a Host route as well as
  Subnet route.
  If host route fails it takes the
  subnet route instead.
             Floating Static routes
• This route is not permanently entered in the
  routing table.

• ip route destination   mask next-hop administrative
  distance
             Load Sharing
• Equal-cost load sharing

• Unequal-cost load sharing
• Per-Destination Load Sharing or Fast
  Switching
• Per-Host Load Sharing or Process
