September, 2008 Page 3 UNIONS ARE KEY TO REVIVING AMERICA Remember postwar prosperity? Unions brought it to you. Now, before your eyes begin to glaze over, read on. I’m not an economist, but I married one. I am a United Auto Workers member at the Lansing Delta Township plant. My wife is an economist with a Ph.D. When it comes to politics, I am the irresistible force and she is the immovable object. According to the law of physics, something has to give. Our latest “Big Bang” discussion has centered on the current labor disputes. Forget about the strikes’ chronology, timing, and consequences. That will be the subject of debate and analysis for years to come. Instead, I said, “Honey, let’s talk about history”. The longest period of economic growth in America happened in the 1940’s - 1970’s. It is no accident that during that time, union membership was at the highest level ever. Remember the days when the American dream of home ownership and your kids being “better off” than their parents were commonplace? Nowadays, the only way to be “better off” than your parents is to move in with them and hope they include you in the will. Our country is charting an economic course that smacks of the Dark Ages. The serfs - that’s us, the working men and women - live and work to serve the ruling class, a.k.a. corporate America. Their “low bidder” mentality has placed our once proud nation at risk and eroded our manufacturing base to a bread-line mentality, where $14 an hour is somehow considered “as good as it gets”. Meanwhile, the Wall Street wizards manipulate our currency, offshore everything, and get high fives from the White House, while more struggling families lose their homes. When we change our economic policy and strengthen the middle class, the mortgage crisis will disappear because our Unions will negotiate good-paying jobs that allow us to make our mortgage payments. The health-care crisis will disappear because our Unions will bargain health care for all American workers and their families. Globalization will not be a dirty word because our Unions would set the standard for all workers across the globe to demand safe and healthy working conditions and fair pay. That will increase productivity and profit for corporations that their workers can share. Finally, America will be a safe and secure nation when we stop wasting billions of dollars building roads, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure for hostile nations, while our families at home suffer. This American thinks it’s high time we turn our vast resources inward and start taking care of “the little guy” the working men and women who are the foundation of our nation. Back in the Dark Ages, the serfs “did something” by grabbing their pitchforks, uniting in an army, and storming the castle. As proud union members, our vote is our pitchfork, Unions are the army, and corporate greed is the castle. Everybody “talks” about supporting the middle class. Las uniones nos trajeron esa prosperidad. Ahora, antes de que sus ojos se empiecen a nublar, lean lo siguiente. Yo no soy un economista, pero me case con una. A hoy en día, la única forma de “estar mejor” es de moverte con tus padres y esperanzarse a que los incluyan en el testamento. Nuestro país esta pasando por un curso económico que nos reduce a una Época Obscura. Los hombres y mujeres trabajadores, viven y trabajan para servirles a la clase de mando, a.k.a. corporación de América. Su “bajo apostador”mentalidad ha puesto a la que una ves fueran nuestra nación de mucho orgullo en riesgo y erróneo en nuestra base manufacturadora en una mentalidad muy débil, donde $14 la hora es de alguna manera considerada tan “buena como se pueda”. Por mientras, los sabios de (Wall Street) manipulan a nuestra actualidad, hasta la orilla de todo y les dan el saludo de mano de parte de la Casa Blanca, mientras más familias están luchando, y perdiendo sus hogares. Cuando nosotros cambiemos nuestra póliza económica y reforcemos la clase media, la crisis hipotecaria desaparecerá, por que nuestras Uniones negociaran buenos trabajos de buena paga que nos permitirán realizar nuestros pagos hipotecarios. La crisis de seguro medico desaparecerá por que nuestras Uniones negociaran seguros médicos para todos los trabajadores Americanos y sus familias. Globalización no será una palabra sucia por que nuestras Uniones pondrán en marcha un mecanismo estándar para todos los trabajadores por todo el mundo, exigiendo condiciones de trabajo seguras y saludables y una paga justa. Que eso incrementara productividad y ganancias para corporaciones que compartirán con sus trabajadores. Finalmente, América será una nación segura cuando pare de mal gastar billones de dólares construyendo carreteras, escuelas, hospitales, e infraestructura para naciones hostiles, mientras nuestras familias sufren en nuestro hogar. Este pensamiento Americano es uno de los altos tiempos donde nosotros debemos voltear nuestros chalecos de recursos en guardiá, y empecemos a cuidar del “más pequeño” los hombres y mujeres trabajadoras quienes son los fundadores de nuestra nación. Atrás en los Tiempos Oscuros, los sirvientes “hicieron algo” agarrando sus picos y palas, formaron un ejercito y sacudieron el castillo. Como orgullosos miembros de la Unión, nuestro voto es nuestro pico y pala, las uniones son los ejércitos, y las corporaciones avaricientas son el castillo. Todas las personas “hablen” acerca de apoyar a la clase media. Les guste o no, la Unión esta “haciendo algo” al respecto. - Brian Fredline Cuando nuestra nación cruza por tiempos difíciles, nos afecta a todos. Tenemos a muchos de nuestros miembros de la familia y amigos quienes arriesgan sus vidas peleando por nuestro país. Todos estamos afectados por la baja en la economía que ha causado un recorte de horas de trabajo, empleados descansados, y hasta la perdida de trabajos. Pero nosotros sabemos que Dios aun nos escucha y contesta a nuestras oraciones. Many of our family members and friends risk their lives fighting for our country. We have all been affected by a slowed economy that has caused a cut in the number of hours worked, layoffs of employees, and even the loss of jobs. But we know God still hears and answers prayers.
