Don’t forget before the Australian Ultimate Champi-
onships are held in Brisbane at the end of April, the
Australian Flying Disc Championships will be on
again. Yes, there is more than Ultimate!

The 2004 Australian Flying Disc Championships is a
4-day event featuring a wide range of Frisbee sports
aside from Ultimate. Both singles and doubles
events are on offer to test all around disc skills.

The Field events include: MTA (Maximum Time
Aloft) for the throw that stays in the air longest; TRC
(Throw Run Catch) for the throw that is thrown the
longest while still being chased down and caught by
the thrower; Distance for the longest throw; and
Accuracy, which involves a series of throws through
a series of ‘goals’ within a specified time limit.

Freestyle, Disc Golf, Double Disc Court (DDC) and
the Discathon will also be held.

Prize categories will include Men and Women in
Junior, Open & Masters age groups with an extra
prize for the best performed Ultra-Star only competi-
tor. So you don’t need a fancy disc to have a go!

Five Thoughts to Take into a Throwing Session
   1. A short session where each throw involves full concentration is many times more useful than a long one without
much mental effort. Be aware this will require a particular effort if the person you are throwing with does not share
your aims and is not as serious about the session.
   2. Put in a pivot or fake with every throw. A game involves almost every throw having a pivot or fake, and the ability to
gain your balance quickly is crucial. But practise holding back the throw if you are not feeling balanced at the point
when you want to throw, and then pivot or fake again.
   3. Visualize exactly the tilt angle and speed and direction of each throw before you throw. Aim for each session to be
an improvement in the percentage of throws that fly exactly as intended.
   4. Spend at least some of each session throwing to a moving target. You may need to practise your charm and
persuasiveness in order to get the other person to move…
   5. Notice when you start to feel tired mentally and physically. Make a conscious effort to concentrate and keep
throwing well (and catching 100%). Do this for a short time but stop before your throws deteriorate. eIther wait to
recharge or end your session there. Don’t practise lazy throwing; the whole aim of practising effectively is to
practise at the level you want to play.
