Two open enrolment Courage & Renewal retreats have been scheduled in Australia for
2010. Both of these retreats will be held at the Warrambui Conference and Retreat
Centre, near Canberra: www.warrambui.org. This retreat centre is set within beautiful
Australian bush land, and offers comfortable and affordable accommodation.

The first retreat will be an Introductory Courage to Lead®, from Fri 18 - Sun 20
June, 2010, and will be facilitated by Janet Smith. The second retreat will be a Circle
of Trust®, and is only offered to people who have already attended another Courage
to Lead®, Courage to Teach® or Circle of Trust® retreat. This retreat is from Fri 27 –
Mon 30 August, 2010, and will be co-facilitated by Janet Smith and Marcy Jackson.
Marcy is the Co-Director of the Center for Courage & Renewal in USA, and has
responsibility for many CCR programs, including their Facilitator Preparation Program.
In this retreat, participants will explore in greater depth conditions that help create
Circles of Trust, and will also provide an opportunity for discussions about how this
work is developing in Australia. Certificates of attendance are provided upon request.

Courage & Renewal Facilitators are prepared in USA by the Center for Courage &
Renewal, and since 1997 this network has grown to include nearly 200 facilitators,
who provide retreats throughout USA and Canada. Janet is the first Australian
Courage & Renewal facilitator, and is the only facilitator outside of North America.

These retreats provide space and quiet so that people can begin to hear their inner
voice. Facilitators create open, disciplined spaces, where participants can discover the
deep connection between role and soul. Through a variety of experiences, participants
are invited to listen for their own inner wisdom, to create a community of mutual
respect and to reconnect professional identity and personal integrity. Each Courage &
Renewal retreat consists of twenty to thirty people who gather for a two or three-day
retreat. In large-group, small group, and solitary settings, the concepts of formation
are explored, making use of personal stories, reflections on practice, journaling and
insights from poets, artists, storytellers, and various wisdom traditions. Retreats often
follow a theme and use metaphors as a way of exploring vocational and life questions.

Feedback from Australian Courage & Renewal retreat participants:

It’s the most powerful professional development I’ve ever experienced.

Thank you! I have attended many PD retreats – none that has met my inner needs as much as this has.

I wish this had happened sooner! I feel as though I have started to see a way forward.

The first time I’ve been encouraged to really look within to the core of what drives me, since beginning
teaching. This is an extremely valuable experience and should be encouraged for others.

The learnings have informed my leadership. I walk more lightly in the world

The Circle of Trust is a life-changing opportunity to reflect and revive the spirit. Thank you!

I learned to listen better, to be more kind, to seek first inquiry, to listen to my heart.

I believe through inner work learned at the Retreat I have become a better person for myself. I am
New leadership is needed for new times, but it will not come from finding more wily ways to
manipulate the external world. It will come as we who serve and teach and lead find the courage to
take an inner journey toward both our shadows and our light—a journey that, faithfully pursued, will
take us beyond ourselves to become healers of a wounded world.
                                               ~ Parker J. Palmer ~

The best leaders work from a place of integrity in themselves, from their hearts. If they don’t, they
can’t inspire trustful relationships. In the absence of trust, organizations fall apart.
                                                   ~ Parker J. Palmer ~

When we leave a circle of trust, we return to the workplace – or any other arena of life – better able
to engage in it in life giving ways. The inner work we have done in the circle reminds us that we are
constantly co-creating the world, so we need not be victims of it.
                                                ~ Parker J. Palmer ~

I pin my hopes to quiet processes and small circles, in which vital and transforming events can take
      place.
                                              ~ Rufus Jones ~

Courage to Lead® retreats are based on the ‘circle of trust’ model developed by
Parker J. Palmer, and described in his book, A Hidden Wholeness. CTL retreats provide
an opportunity for leaders to renew themselves and to cultivate their leadership.

About The Retreat
The goal is to help leaders sustain and renew their passion, enthusiasm and
commitment to leadership and to the communities they serve through participation in
Courage to Lead® retreats. Participants have reported:

• Development of new networks of support with other leaders, counteracting the
prevailing culture of overwork and isolation.

• Revitalized leadership that invites untapped potentials, passions, and talents.

• Increased capacity to cultivate the kind of trustworthy relationships required to be
  an effective leader.

 Courage to Lead:
 • renews heart, mind and spirit through the exploration of the inner landscape of a leader’s life
 • reconnects to one’s identity and integrity—identifying and honouring gifts and strengths, and acknowledging
     limits
 • creates a context for careful listening and deep connection that also honours diversity in person and
     profession
 • helps people create safe spaces and trusting relationships in their workplaces, families, and within their
     communities
