SCHOTT Announces Infrared Filter Glass Supply Agreement with SureFire
Glass Filter Technology for Tactical Illumination Applications Enables Night-Vision Equipped Soldiers To “See” Even Better in the Dark September 12, 2007 (LONDON) – Today at the Defence Systems and Equipment International Exhibition 2007 (DSEi), SCHOTT announced that it has signed a multi-million dollar contract to supply infrared filter glass to SureFire, LLC. The glass will be used to manufacture infrared filters for the company’s Scout Light, X200® LED WeaponsLights and other tactical illumination tools. SureFire’s infrared filters cancel out the visible portion of the light spectrum, producing a smooth beam of infrared light for use with night vision devices and infrared-capable video cameras. Illumination tools that use the filters enhance night vision devices and infrared-capable video cameras’ ability to see in the dark. This provides soldiers and law enforcement officials with a significant tactical advantage during night operations, improving their safety and effectiveness. The filters turn regular SureFire flashlights and other tactical illumination tools into infrared flashlights, where only those equipped with night-vision equipment can see the invisible infrared light emitted by the filtered flashlight. “These are life-saving illumination tools,” said Dave Kluegel, Director of Materials Management of SureFire LLC. “By combining our expertise in tactical illumination with SCHOTT’s innovative glass filter technology, we have been able to improve military and security forces’ ability to safely operate without any visible light.”
