Molecules & Compounds
A combination of two or more atoms is called
a molecule.
When two or more molecules are combined,
it is called a compound.
Compounds are chemically pure and all of
their molecules are identical.
Mixtures & Solutions
Mixtures are substances composed of two
or more components physically intermixed.
Solutions are homogeneous mixtures of
gases, liquids, or solids.
The substance that takes up the greatest
amount is the solvent while the substance
with the smaller amount is called the solute.
Concentration of Solutions
Solutions are described in terms of
concentration.
They are described in terms of the percent
of the solute in the total solution.
Another to express the concentration of a
solution is in terms of molarity.
Colloids
Colloids are heterogeneous mixtures that
appear translucent or milky.
Colloids have unique properties such as the
ability to change reversibly from a fluid to a
more solid state (also known as sol-gel
transformations).
An example would be Jell-O or any gelatin.
Suspensions
Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures
with large, visible solutes that settle out.
An example is blood, where blood cells are
suspended in the fluid portion of the blood.
