									                                Microsoft Publisher 2000
                                                          GENERAL INFORMATION
This sheet is designed to be an aid to you as you are using Microsoft Publisher 2000. You may also use the on-line help
offered in this package by clicking on the word Help that is displayed on the menu bar at the top of the screen. If you

                                               ACCESSING PUBLISHER
To open Access, click on StartProgramsMicrosoft OfficeMicrosoft Publisher. You are now looking at the opening
page for Publisher. This is called the Publisher Catalog.
                                                   USING THE PUBLISHER CATALOG
When creating a new publication, the catalog has three options to choose from: Publications by Wizard, Publications
by Design, Blank Publications.
The first option, Publications by Wizard, allows you to be helped in creating attractive and effective publications. The
available wizards are listed in a menu down the left-hand side of the catalog. Highlight a wizard to see previews of the
publication of its type. Double-click on the design you like to begin the wizard.
The second option is the Publication by Design. When this is selected, you will see a list of Design Sets down the left
side of the catalog. Each Design Set contains a selection of publications whose color scheme, graphic elements, fonts,
etc., have already been created. To preview each Design Set, just highlight the appropriate one and the preview is seen
on the right side of the catalog. Double click on the Design Set of your choice, and the publication will appear along with
the appropriate wizard on the left side of the workplace.
The next option that is given is Blank Publication. This is useful if you want to be creative and make a customized
publication with the help of a Quick Publication Wizard.
                                                   CREATING A BLANK PUBLICATION
When choosing the option of creating a Blank Publication, your workspace will have two different areas, a page area
and a scratch area. The page area is represented by the white triangle and is where you will place your text, graphics,
etc. that will appear in your final publication. The scratch area is represented by the gray space that surrounds the white
triangle. This space is a virtual desktop where you can drag items when you do not need them, or storing them for later
     Vertically down on the left side of the workspace is a special toolbar called the Objects Toolbar. This includes:

         inserts clip art into the publication                     allows for a HTML code to be created on the web page (template) in order
                                                                   to have such features as a script, a counter, or even a scrolling marquee
         adds lines to the publication

                                                        OPENING AN EXISTING FILE
To open an existing file of Publisher, click on the Existing Files button in the Publisher Catalog. Once you select the
correct drive, a list of available files on that drive will appear. Click on the file you wish to edit and then choose Open.
To open a file when you are already in Publisher, click on File, then Open. Select the drive from which you wish to
retrieve a file. Click on the file you wish to edit and then choose Open.
                                                       SAVING A FILE
You should save your publication to avoid losing any changes. However, Publisher has an automatic reminder to save
your work every fifteen minutes. If you wish to save click Yes, if not click No. When saving your file for the first time, click
on Save As, under the File menu. First, select the correct drive at the end of the window by clicking on the down arrow
next to the Save in: box. Scroll up or down until you can select the drive you wish to use (A:\ or P:\). Next, name the
publication at the bottom of the window where is says File Name and click Save. After you have given the file a name,
you can save the publication by clicking on the Save icon on the toolbar.
                                                   ADDING BORDER ART
You can add style and pizzazz to your publication by adding Border Art. To add Border Art to your publication you first,
highlight the appropriate text box. Then, click on Format, choose Line/Border Style button. Then click More Styles.
Two options are given to you, Line Border and Border Art. Line Border lets you choose a size and color of line and
which sides of the frame to apply it with in your publication. Border Art expands your possibilities with decorative
borders. Select the border of your choosing and then click Apply and then OK.
You can create your own border if no other border is to your liking. With in the Border Style Dialog Box, click on the
Create Custom and choose a graphic from the Clip Gallery or choose a picture from file.
                                                       TYPING IN TEXT
In order to insert text into a Publisher publication, you need to click on the Text Frame Tool at the top of the Objects
toolbar. Your pointer changes into to a plus sign. Use this to draw a box where you want the text to appear. Type your
text into the frame just as if you were typing on a document in Word. If you run out of space, you can resize your text
frame by clicking and dragging the black boxes that surround the text.
                                                  INSERTING A TEXT FILE
To insert a whole text file from another application, you first need to draw a text frame as described above. Then click on
Insert, choose Text File from the menu bar. Locate the file you want to insert and click OK. Publisher will insert the file
into your text box.
                                               WORKING WITH DROP CAPS
A drop cap is a large initial letter in a piece of text, normally the first letter of the first paragraph. To apply a drop cap to
the beginning of a particular paragraph, click anywhere in that paragraph text box. Then choose Format, and then click
on Drop Cap.
Publisher has several styles of Drop Caps that are available for use. Click on the one you like and then click OK. If you
don’t see a drop cap you like in the Drop Cap dialog box, click Custom Drop Cap tab and you can design your own
under that option.
