Content/Methods

1. Explanation of the term “protocol”
When we talk about prayer we often talk about the protocol of prayer. Protocol
means “a code of correct conduct.” It also means “the forms of ceremony and
etiquette observed by diplomats and heads of state.”
What are some examples of protocol?
It is protocol for everyone to stand during the national anthem and the pledge of
allegiance. It is protocol for members of the military to salute one another with their
right hand. The lower ranking officer salutes first.
We can think of protocol as “doing a right thing in a right way”
There are rules and protocols when driving. On an interstate highway it is protocol
for slower drivers to drive in the right hand lane and faster drivers to drive in the left
hand lane. (Draw example of on white board of how traffic flow is messed up when
this protocol isn‟t followed.) The protocols of driving help everyone get where they
need to go in an orderly fashion. They make your driving effective.

In many things in life we have protocol to follow, and if we don‟t follow the protocol
we don‟t get the desired results.
   1. Say you go to a store and decide you want to buy something. Instead of picking
up the item, going to the cash register and paying for it you just leave the money
on the shelf. What‟s going to happen? Well you could very well be arrested for
shoplifting. After you show the policeman the money you left on the shelf (if it is
still there and someone else didn‟t take it) you probably wouldn‟t go to jail but
things definitely didn‟t go as planned.
   2. As another example, suppose you are mailing a letter to a friend. Instead of
writing the address in the middle, the return address on the top left, and the
stamp on the top right you put the address you are sending to on the top left and
the stamp on the back. Is the letter going to get where you want it to go? Maybe,
but probably not. At best it is going to be delayed significantly because it can‟t be
read the automated machines. These problems will occur because you didn‟t
follow the protocol for addressing a letter.
Similarly with prayer, God has given us instructions, rules to follow. If we don‟t
follow those instructions our prayers won‟t be effective (accomplish what we want it
   to accomplish.)

2. Explanation of the Protocol of Prayer

   Address God the Father
Matt 6:8-9 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you
ask Him. Pray, then, in this way: „Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your
   name.‟”

   By means of the Spirit
Eph 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in
view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,
 Filled with the Spirit (under the control of the Spirit)
o Eph 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled
          with the Spirit,
    Leading of the Spirit
o Gal 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
o Rom 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of
          God.
 Bearing witness of the Spirit
o Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of
          God,

In the name of God the Son - Jesus
John 14:13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be
   glorified in the Son.”

In accordance with the will of God
   See John 14:13 above

1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask
anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in
whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from
   Him.

   For the glory of God
   see John 14:13 above

   With faith
Mark 11:24 "Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe
that you have received them, and they will be granted you.
James 1:5-7 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all
generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith
without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and
tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything
   from the Lord,

Malleability to the Will of God
   Matt 26:36-44
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His
disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be
   grieved and distressed.
38 Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain
here and keep watch with Me."
39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My
Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will."
40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So,
you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?
41 "Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is
willing, but the flesh is weak."
42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot
pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done."
43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same
   thing once more.

3. Other Things to Know About Prayer

   Parts of Prayer
   1. Confession of Sin
   2. Thanksgiving
   3. Pray for Others
   4. Pray for Self

Why do we start with confession of sin?
   Ps 66:18 If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear;

What some of the things we might pray for others? Healing if they are sick, help with
a problem, etc. These are good things to pray for but the Bible has other examples
of prayer that we might not have thought of. Things we pray for others can include
   the following:

    Spiritual growth
o Col 1:9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased
to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will
in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
o Eph 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you
will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of
          His inheritance in the saints,
    Salvation of unbelievers
o Rom 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and my prayer to God for them is for
          their salvation.
 For pastors and believers teaching and presenting the gospel
o Eph 6:19 and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the
opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the
          gospel,

4. When to Pray

1 Thess 5:16-18 Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this
is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Col 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;

1 Thess 3:10 as we night and day keep praying most earnestly that we may see your
face, and may complete what is lacking in your faith?

Prayer should be a part of your daily life and who you are. Don‟t compartmentalize it to
something you do at the end of the day. How would it feel if you were home all day and
didn‟t communicate with anyone in your family? You didn‟t say a single word. It would
be very lonely. Just as you talk to family members or people at school throughout the
day so you should be talking to God throughout the day. It doesn‟t have to be a big,
long, formal prayer, but it does need to follow the protocol.

For example, if you are getting ready to take a test at school. You could pray – first
confess your sins – “Dear Father, I pray that you would help me to remember all of the
things I studied for this test. Help me to understand what the questions are asking.
Help me to work quickly and complete the test in the allotted time. I pray that you would
help me to get an A. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.”

If you didn‟t study at all, do you think God is going to magically plant the information in
your mind and help you make an A? He could but I doubt He will. Remember God‟s
character is always consistent. He tells us that whatever we do, do it unto the Lord.
(Col 3:23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.)
That would include studying for a test. So if you didn‟t study, you weren‟t doing your job
as a student as unto the Lord.
