“David Hare's Stuff Happens is undeniably one of the cultural events of the year.”
                               The Guardian, UK, September 2004
“Stuff happens…and it’s untidy, and freedom’s untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes and
commit crimes and do bad things.” Donald Rumsfeld, US Secretary of Defense, April 11 2003, when
asked to comment on the widespread looting of Baghdad.
David Hare (My Zinc Bed, Judas Kiss, Via Dolorosa) has taken Rumsfeld’s comments as the starting
point for this odyssey into the heart of the reasons for the invasion of Iraq. Fusing transcripts from
articles and press conferences with real dialogue collected in personal interviews, Stuff Happens is one
of the most compelling new plays of our time.
Neil Armfield directs a stellar cast of 16 actors playing over 60 characters in a production of epic
proportions, taking the audience on an urgent and exhilarating ride from the Oval Office to the streets of
Baghdad to the inevitable outcome. It should not go un-noted that at Armfield’s behest, Hare made a
special addition to the script for this Australian Premiere – a single-line reference to John Howard.
After the Sydney season, Company B’s production of Stuff Happens will play at Melbourne’s Comedy
Theatre, 24 August–11 September, presented by newtheatricals in association with Lunchbox Theatrical
Productions.
“…a masterly piece of work – illuminating, gripping, wildly funny and ultimately desperately sad.”
                                       Daily Telegraph, UK
“Brilliant…the most powerful work of drama for years.” Daily Mail, UK
