Dear Russell,

Media Watch is currently looking at a story to do with plagiarism allegations
concerning the Northern Star.

The story relates to entertainment listings first published by the Byron Shire
Echo, beginning late last year. The Byron Shire Echo claims that some of these
listings appeared in the Northern Star a few days later. The Echo has provided
examples of fictitious listings that were duplicated in the Northern Star a few
days later. (I’ll fax these up separately.)

We would appreciate it if you could assist us by answering the following
questions:

   1. Do you accept some of the entertainment listings have been copied from
the Byron Shire Echo and reproduced in the Northern Star?

   2. Do you think it’s appropriate for your newspaper to copy from another
      newspaper and publish without attribution?

   3. Do you regard it as plagiarism?

   4. What action have you taken?

In order to give proper consideration to your response and to meet our
production deadlines we would appreciate your response by Friday 10th March.

Regards,

Rebecca Latham

Dear Rebecca,

In response to your letter.

We thought the idle boys at the Echo were having such fun we didn't
have
the heart to stop their little game.

For the record though, our entertainment listings are compiled
outside of
editorial by clerical staff, who call all the venues each week and
then
check published listings to see if any have been missed. Since
finding out
that they have used some unattributed listings from the Echo, I've
warned
them against the practice.

I rang the editor of the Echo, with whom I have a friendly
relationship,
and apologised. He accepted it wasn't our policy to plagiarise.

When we asked the Echo writers why they did not alert us to the
problem a year ago, they said they were enjoying their little game so
much they
didn't want to stop. We're happy for them to provide our whole gig
guide if they like. And we hope Media Watch spends our taxpayers'
money wisely and actually sends the Liz Jackson Trio to play at
Broken Head.

Regards,

Russell Eldridge
