REFLECTION From the Principal…
08/08/07 29/25 ANDREA O'BRIEN REFLECTION On Wednesday, we celebrate the feast of a remarkable woman. Mary MacKillop stands out as an example of great courage and trust in living out the mission of God. She reached out in love and compassion to those most in need. Luke: 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” We pray: 1. For the passion to bring good news to the poor. 2. For courage to meet the challenges of today’s world. 3. For the acceptance of difficulties that come our way. 4. For willingness to embrace the cross in our lives. 5. For trust in the providence of God. From the Principal… Dear Parents and Friends, Discussions with some of our Senior School students have really emphasized for me how much life at school has really changed. At the moment within the College we are educating two apprentice carpenters, four apprentice vehicle mechanics and apprentice mechanical engineers, hairdressers and painters and decorators. We have nineteen trainees in areas such as retail operations, hospitality, animal studies, information technology and transport and warehousing. Twenty four students are combining senior studies with TAFE delivered courses and a number of students are on long term work placements with prospective employers. Add to that the rest of the student body working along more traditional paths to employment or university education, and you have a small snapshot of modern secondary education. Students at Ryan Catholic College are certainly supported in their choice of career and education options! Don’t forget those tickets for “The Wiz”. Enjoy the week ANDREA O'BRIEN Principal. A special thank you to all Parents and Carers who were able to join us for today’s special assembly. It was wonderful to have Nick, our College’s Assistant Principal in Student Services and Father Dave with us for this special occasion. Next week’s assembly will be hosted by 1C on Wednesday 15th August at 8.45am. HEAD LICE: The problem with head lice is still with us. Parents/Carers are asked to check their children’s hair regularly to avoid it spreading. Your local pharmacy carries products and advice to remove and prevent head lice. UNIFORM POLICY: Parents and Carers are reminded of the College uniform policy. Please check that your child’s shoes are in accordance with the uniform policy. If they are not, please remember when purchasing new shoes to purchase shoes in line with the College requirements. Shoes must be black leather lace up or plain black leather lace up joggers. No other shoes are part of our uniform. Also a reminder to Parents/Carers that girls with shoulder length hair or longer need to have their hair tied with school-coloured ribbons/elastic. Thank you to Warrina Ice Skating Rink for their student voucher for our August ‘Student of the Month’ winners. Warrina Ice Rink is the only ice skating rink in Townsville and is still running, better than ever. Their address is 3-5 Illuka Street, Currajong. Our lost property containers continue to grow. We have many jackets and hats without names. Please check that your child’s name and current class is clearly visible on all school uniform items. Please enjoy the rest of your week and remember to love, listen and laugh. God Bless, Eric SENIOR NEWS CURRICULUM NEWS: Year 10: Next week, from Monday 13th August to Friday 17th August, the College will be conducting interviews with all Year 10 students and their parents. The purpose of the interviews is to develop a SET plan and provide an opportunity for students, parents and the College to ensure a student’s Senior Phase of Learning (Year 11 and 12) supports their chosen career path. By now ALL students should have returned to the College their interview request forms indicating times and availability. This week students will be receiving a letter indicating: • Interview time • The interviewee. Students need to bring the following to their interview: • Interview preparation sheet • 2010 Prerequisite Book • Job guides Interviews go for 20 minutes and have proven very helpful for both parents and students. Should you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Bernadette Witham on 47730100 RE NEWS This week we celebrated World Peace Day. Years 6 and 3 participated in class liturgies to commemorate and promote peace in our world. Today, August 8th, we celebrate the Feast day of Australia’s first saint, Blessed Mary MacKillop. SCHOOL SPORTING NEWS GENERAL The North Queensland Catholic Secondary School Touch Carnival On Saturday 4th August Ryan hosted the North Queensland Catholic Secondary School Touch Carnival at Greenwood Sporting Grounds. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The weather was terrific; all students participated at a high standard and in the Catholic spirit. The carnival saw All Hallows School and Ignatius Park College take out the Open and 15s Girls and Boys divisions respectively. Special mention goes to Alieia Spence and John Andreou who were named Best and Fairest of the Carnival in their divisions. Our best placed Ryan team was the Open Girls who lost to All Hallows in the finals. There are many people who deserved to be thanked as they made the day a success: Thanks to Andrea for coming down to watch some of the games and to make the presentations: Ann for her coordination of the canteen, placing billets and coaching the Open Boys team: to the many staff who helped with setting up, during the carnival, and cleaning up, Allister Crocker, Greg Christ, Lyall Herlihy, Shayne Harrison, Corinn Dinsmore, Ben Schumacher, Leisa Atkinson, Bonnie Nicholas, Jessica Keen, Daryl Bathe, Lyndall Conaghan, Jan Hughes and the other staff who helped out. Thanks to all the parents and parents of students who are no longer at the College or were not playing on the day for their tireless work in the canteen and cleaning up: to the many staff who came down to support our students on the day; to all the families who billeted the All Hallows girls; to Drew Westcott, Darryl Serrurier, and Steve Tilbee for their generosity on a Saturday to referee more games than expected with little time for a rest!; to the ground staff for their work with the preparation of the fields and grounds maintenance; to the ladies in the office, especially Robyn who designed all the certificates. Finally, thank you to all the students who helped out on the day and for your participation. All these people made the Carnival a great day. PRIMARY SPORT: Athletics training continues this week. All the Schools are assigned jobs to do on the day and to help out with catering. This year we are looking after sandwiches & wraps. More information about this will come out later. We hope all students are enjoying training and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Training next Tuesday morning will be at Thuringowa Gymnastics.
