UCAT
• The UK Clinical Aptitude Test • Affects all those applying for entry in 2007 onwards • Help universities to choose btw the many very qualified applicants • Assesses mental ability, attitudes and professional behaviours • Designed to test aptitude rather than strictly academic achievement
What‟s tested?
Test will comprise 4 sections: • Verbal reasoning • Quantitative reasoning • Abstract reasoning • Decision analysis Multiple choice questions, each section will be separately timed Total exam time will be less than 2 hours Test done on a computer at special test centres
Registering for UKCAT
• Register online at www.ukcat.ac.uk from June onwards • You choose the date when you sit the exam, and which test centre you wish to sit it at • For entry in 2007 or deferred 2008 entry, UKCAT must be sat by 28 September 2006 • test costs £60 to sit – if you register in June and do the test before the end of July, offer discount! • Bursaries are planned but very little detail yet!
The Results
• UKCAT will provide scaled scores, which will enable universities to rank applicants in a „meaningful, valid and reliable‟ way • The results will be used alongside academic results, personal statements, references and performance at interview to decide offers • UKCAT results will be sent to candidates 1-2 months after the sit the test
Medical School
• All are slightly different – look at some websites! • Entry Criteria? • Usually 5 years, sometimes 6 • Pre-clinical and clinical parts • Patient contact from the start?
Things to find out
• Tuition Fees ? • Is the med school at the university or miles away? • What is the city / Uni / campus like • How big is it? • Where might they send me? • Do I get to do a BSc? Or even BMedSci? • Are there Graduate Entry Medics too? • What's the accommodation like?
Don‟t forget
• You are choosing somewhere to spend 5 years – get it right! • All medical schools turn out equally qualified doctors • Every med school will have all the info online • Plus you can ask med students / other students
• Years 1 - 2:
– Lectures, seminars, practicals (25hrs / week) – Early clinical experience
• Year 3
– Research project (decide your own timetable) – Clinical practice course
• Years 4 – 5 (clinical)
– ACE course / paeds, O&G, specials, psych – Elective
