Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation
“Education should be physical as well as mental and moral… Students should be trained
in health and vigor through outdoor life and sports.” Comenius 1592 - 1670
As you know Moravian has a longstanding commitment to excellence in education. Known as “A Small National
Treasure”, and recognized as America’s sixth oldest college, dating back to 1742, we have based our mission on the
traditions of John Amos Comenius. His teachings sought a balance between the intellectual, moral and physical
development of each person. He took the basic principles of the liberal arts “Mens sana in corpore sano” - a healthy mind
in a healthy body – and carried them to the next level – a sound mind, a healthy body, and a content spirit. In that
tradition, we place great stock in the role of physical education, athletics and recreation in overall student development –
indeed, more than a third of our students participate in varsity athletic programs, the majority are involved in one of our
recreational programs, and every student must complete a physical education requirement to graduate.
The college offers co-curricular programs for all levels of student interest, recreational, intramural, club sport and
varsity participation. Recreational opportunities include using one of the many facilities, from the fitness center to the
sand volleyball courts to organizing a trip or an event with your residence hall. Intramural programs are offered to all
students including both team and individual competitions. These have included everything from flag football, basketball
and volleyball to floor hockey, darts and ping-pong. Club sport programs are run by students for students and have
included, ice hockey, equestrian, wrestling, men’s volleyball and women’s golf to name a few. For the serious student
athlete Moravian offers an opportunity for excellence in varsity athletic programs including baseball, basketball, cross-
country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, track, and tennis for men and basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, field
hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, track, tennis, volleyball for women.
Moravian is a highly respected Division III (non-scholarship) member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA), the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), the Centennial Conference for football, and the Landmark Conference
for all other sports.
Over the years we have developed a highly successful NCAA Division III athletics program and one of the most
competitive in the nation. We have developed National Champions, All Americans, academic all Americans, and NCAA
Post-Graduate Award winners; captured conference and division titles; supported conference players of the year, Olympic
athletes and professional athletes; as well as National Players and Coaches of the Year, and Fulbright scholar athletes.
