GUIDE TO HEALTH AND MEDICINE MUSEUM COLLECTIONS in NSW & ACT Revised October, 2003 Guide to Health and Medicine Collections in NSW and ACT Guide to Health and Medicine Collections in NSW and ACT Health and Medicine Museums Special Interest Group October 2003 2 Guide to Health and Medicine Collections in NSW and ACT CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ...................................................................... 4 SECTION 1................................................................................. 5 Hospitals and Healthcare Agencies .......................................... 5 SECTION 2............................................................................... 14 Health Related Organisations................................................. 14 SECTION 3............................................................................... 22 Community Collections with a health & medicine focus....... 22 SECTION 4............................................................................... 32 University Collections............................................................ 32 SECTION 5............................................................................... 36 Australian Capital Territory ................................................... 36 BIBLIOGRAPHY, SELECTED REFERENCES..................... 37 ORGANIZATIONS AVAILABLE TO PROVIDE ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE................................................................. 38 3 Guide to Health and Medicine Collections in NSW and ACT INTRODUCTION Health and Medicine heritage collections exist in many forms that range from formal museum collections housed in public institutions and community museums, informal museums housed in hospitals and health facilities, historical collections on display in the public space of hospitals, health facilities and universities to those that are personal collections that have been rescued from destruction or disposal. This directory contains information about the many health and medical related museums and historical collections that currently exist throughout NSW. The information within this directory has been derived primarily from information contained within the files of Ms Megan Hicks, Curator Health and Medicine Powerhouse Museum, from the records of the Health & Medicine Museums Special Interest Group (HMM SIG) of Museums Australia Inc., from the Australian Museums on Line (AMOL) website and from information known to the author of this report. The decision to include all collections with a health and medicine focus within this report was predicated on the various uses that users of this guide might find helpful. Sections 1 and 2 include hospitals and health related organizations that hold specialized collections and section 3 lists the community museums that claim health and medicine items amongst their holdings. In many instances these museums have taken unwanted items from hospitals that have indicated they have no wish to keep the items, have closed down or have had their function changed. The community collections provide a valuable source of information about health heritage in both urban and rural communities. The University collections listed in section 4, whilst specialized and reflective of the particular department’s collecting policy provide a useful resource for both scholars and researchers and many departments and faculties allow limited public access. The final section provides information about collections within the Australian Capital Territory. The listings in this guide are correct at the time of compilation, however a guide such as this can never be considered to be complete. It is therefore recommended that updating of this guide be undertaken on a regular basis as further information becomes available or when additional holdings are identified as health agencies undertake audits as part of their health heritage responsibilities. Alternatively consideration could be given to subscribing to the Health & Medicine SIG, which would provide access to Australia wide data. 4 Guide to Health and Medicine Collections in NSW and ACT SECTION 1 Hospitals and Healthcare Agencies Bloomfield Museum Location: Bloomfield Hospital Orange NSW Contact: Mr Keith Melville Position: Hon.
