HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER
1. Header This is the area where your name and address is. Use the same format that you used on your resume, so that you are easily distinguished as a candidate. 2. Introductory Paragraph Name of position SR# Where was the position advertised? Your interest in the position Why should you be selected?
“It is with great interest that I am applying for the position of Program Coordinator for Student Leadership Programs with Student Development (SR#: 0-012345) that was recently advertised in the ASU Insight. I have over five years of experience with developing educational and leadership programs and services designed to enhance the student learning experience. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my skills with advising students and designing leadership programs. 3. Body of the Letter Provide specific information about your skills and abilities to highlight or add to the information in your resume. Use this opportunity to highlight how you meet the desired qualifications.
4. Summary Paragraph
List the position again. Summarize why you would be an asset to their department. Invite them to contact you in the future. DO NOT SAY that you will contact them. That approach is too aggressive. Thank them for considering you as a candidate for the position.
“In summary, I believe that I possess the unique qualifications as a student advisor, educator and administrator to be effective in the role of Program Coordinator for Student Leadership with Student Development. You can expect that I will work collaboratively with students and staff to design programs and services to enhance the student learning experience. If you feel that my credentials match this position, I welcome the opportunity to speak with you further. I appreciate your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.” 5. Printing Print your cover letter on the same paper as your resume. The cover letter should be no longer than one page long.
