Why use Rewards and Recognition?

To encourage participation and provide incentives for continued student and volunteer
involvement, a rewards system has been developed as part of the Walking School Bus
program. The program aims to provide participating students with incentives that are
practical and fun. However, the system will only work if accurate records are provided.
The impact of Walking School Bus programs is determined by recording the number of
trips made by participating students. This data is evaluated by the Department for
Planning and Infrastructure and is essential to secure ongoing program funding.

How does the Walking School Bus Reward and Recognition work?

Rewards and Incentives for Children

At the end of each term, the Department for Planning and Infrastructure will supply a
small reward for each child participating in the Walking School Bus. Additionally, each
new child joining the Walking School Bus will be given a certificate.

How rewards are distributed is up to the Volunteer Activity Coordinator. However, we
suggest that at least once a year, preferably early in the year, rewards be handed out
to students at school assemblies. This raises the profile of the Walking School Bus
Program and celebrates the achievement of the students in front of their peers. As
other parents are often in attendance it may also be an opportunity to encourage more
supporters of the program and provide an opportunity for you to recruit a few more
parent volunteers.

Rewarding volunteers

Each term volunteers are rewarded with a Dome coffee shop voucher. These vouchers
provide an excellent opportunity for parent volunteers to meet informally, especially for
schools that have more than one Walking School Bus route.
