Job Applications & Resumes
What is a Job Application?
• Standard form used by companies to see qualifications of potential employees • A way for companies to compare information on different potential employees
Basic Rules for Completing a Job Application
• Use black ink (not another color and NOT pencil) • PRINT neatly • Answer all questions – if something does not apply to you write N/A, don’t just leave it blank • Answer all questions honestly
More about Applications
• Signing the application tells the employer that the information you wrote is true. You can be fired if they find out you lied.
• If you know the salary they are paying, write that for “Desired Salary” – otherwise, write “Open”
What is a Resume?
• A formal document that lists your education and work experience • A way to tell the employer what skills you have to help them choose to hire you
Why do I need a resume?
• It is expected by hiring managers • If you do not have one, other candidates may potentially be chosen instead of you • It shows that you are a professional
Creating a Simple Resume
• Name and contact information • Education
• Work Experience
Resume Basics
• Use plain white paper • Use simple, standard fonts, large enough to read (Ariel, Times Roman, Verdana) • Do NOT include graphics or pictures • Do NOT use any colored fonts or WordArt • Space the resume attractively on the page • A resume should be no longer than 1 page
