Job Application Forms
This is the last main step in applying for a position. This part of the application process can either make or break you.
Filling Out Your Application
Employers will often have you fill out the application on the spot. Bring along your personal fact sheet.
Don’t be eliminated for consideration for a job just because your form is incorrect or sloppy.
Tips to Follow When Filling Out an Application:
Read the entire application before you begin writing. Make sure you understand all the questions. Follow the instructions such as how to fill out the application (black ink only, blue ink only or typed). Watch sections that state for employee use only.
Filling Out an Application Continued
Complete every question on both sides of the form. If a question does not apply to you write N/A. DO NOT JUST LEAVE IT BLANK! If an application asks you what salary you expect, write either open or negotiable.
Filling Out an Application Continued
In the section marked employment history don’t forget to write down all of your part-time jobs. If the application asks why you left simply state: summer job only. If you left for another reason word it carefully. Avoid anything negative about yourself or a former employer.
Filling Out an Application Continued
Be as neat as possible! If you must change anything (spelling error or incorrect information) draw a single line through the mistake. When you are finished filling out the application return it to the correct person followed by a firm handshake.
Illegal Questions
When you apply for a position you have certain legal rights. This prevents discrimination in job hiring related to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, and disability. A disability CAN be discussed IF it were to affect the job performance. During the interview it is ok to ask how the question and job are related. At the same time emphasize your desire to provide accurate answers to all job related questions.
