FAMILY LAW SECTION COUNCIL MEETING BY TELEPHONE CONFERENCE AUGUST 20, 2008 MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS 1. 2. Welcome and Introductions by Chair, Linda Pall June 27, 2008 Annual Meeting Minutes were approved as written.
3. Tore Beal-Gwartney: Advised that the Family Law Council of Community Property States will hold its Symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March, 2009. Tore will spearhead the project; Tom Dial and Linda Pall will also attend. The Section supports the attendance of these members. 4. Secretary-Treasurer’s Report: Minutes from June 27, 2008 meeting were approved. Section Financial Report was sent to the Section on August 21, 2008. The Budget was sent to the Bar. 5. Policy re: reimbursement from Section budget to outside Section Officers for travel expenses incurred traveling to Boise for Section meetings was approved. 6. OLD BUSINESS 6.1: 6.2. Linda Pall is working on revisions to Section by-laws. Report from Strategic Planning Session on May 11, 2008 in Boise List Serve Committee: Liz Brandt reported that the List Serve is
apparently going well with significant use by Section members. Survey Committee: Debra Everman reported that she had sent a Survey Committee Request out as an e-mail with no response. Fred Zundel requested a telephone conference for the committee members and a conference was set for August 27, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. Legislative/Rules Committee: John Schroeder and David Hyde are working on legislative recommendations, in particular a change in the Special Power of Attorney in the Probate Code. Tore advised that this body cannot suggest or advocate legislative changes, but can only provide information through testimony. Mediation Training Proposal: Linda reported that Viki Howard may be willing to offer $2,000.00 to assist in providing training for a week long seminar. Viki
will report on the possibility of a mediation seminar at the next meeting. CLE Committee: Regarding the October Annual Bar Meeting in October, 2008, Audrey Numbers reported that Robin Sanchez has agreed to be on the family law panel with Linda and Liz Brandt on October 10, 2008 at 8:30 a.m. Mary Hobson requests a basic CLE for a Child Custody Case, designed for inexperienced IVLP attorneys so they will be up to date with the procedures. There will be two (2) CLE’s to be held at the Doubletree Riverside in Boise, the first on February 13, 2009 and the second on April 17, 2009. It was agreed by the Council that our Section should be present at the July, 2009 Bar Annual Meeting. Linda suggested a workshop on “working your way through a 1040.” 7. Hand Book Wrap-up: Tom Dial requires an update from Tore by September 15, 2008. Supplements will be sold separately to those who already own a Hand Book Tore suggested that some practitioners need the Hand Book but may not be aware of its existence. She suggested advertising it on the list serve. 8. Family Law Award of Distinction: Nominations need to be sent to Linda Pall by August 29, 2008 @ lpall @moscow.com and should contain a short paragraph or two about the contributions that the nominee has made to the practice of family law across the state. Kirsten Dutcher reported that the Sage Room is vailable at 11:45 a.m. for lunch and presentation of the Award. A catered lunch will be arranged by Kirsten. NEW BUSINESS; 1. Family Advocate Issue: Our issue will be in January, 2009. Deadline for submission of articles will be in November. 2. Meeting Schedule for 2008-2009: (Linda Pall) Council meetings will be on the third Wednesday of each month except September, when it will be on the fourth Wednesday. The meetings will be primarily by telephone conference with several meetings during the year to be face to face in Boise. A schedule of the meetings may be found in Linda’s August 20 Agenda. The next meeting will be on September 24 at noon at the Cosho Humphrey office with lunch provided. Telephone RSVP’s to Dayna Farrero by September 17th will secure a lunch. The meeting was adjourned at 12:55 Mountain Time.
