GRANT PROPOSAL KANSAS TRAILS MAP & GUIDE SUBMITTED BY KANSAS TRAILS COUNCIL August 1, 2006
INTRODUCTION
The Kansas Trails Council, Inc. and its volunteers maintain 14 trails on State Park and Corps of Engineers properties in Eastern Kansas. The KTC’s trails, which span over 180 miles in length, provide access to hundreds of thousands of hikers, runners, bikers and equestrians annually. The KTC is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation dedicated to the development and enjoyment of Kansas trails. Informal surveys indicate that there are presently over 400 trails located throughout the state. This project would provide funding to create and print a Kansas Trails Map & Guide showing the location of significant trails in each region of the state and providing information about the various trails. In collaboration with the Kansas Departments of Commerce, Wildlife and Parks and Transportation, the KTC will develop an inventory of trails in each area of the state. Then a trail map and guide brochure will be developed and printed for distribution at visitor centers and highway rest stops throughout the state.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project partners believe that a statewide map and guide to Kansas trails will improve the recreation information available to Kansans and will help attract out-of-state tourists to the many parks across the state. The partners believe that this project will benefit all Kansans who are interested in out-door recreation and will improve the economy of many of the smaller Kansas communities. The statewide trail map will show the location of significant trails in each region of the state. Key trails will be featured with photographs and detailed information regarding the location of trailheads, type of trail surface, trail usage and nearby support facilities. The KTC will first develop a comprehensive inventory of Kansas trails and gather trail information by on-site reviews of the significant trails. The partners will then develop a trail map and guide brochure and print 75,000 copies for distribution throughout the state. Because printing costs will be a function of the final brochure design and size, the print quantity will be adjusted to remain within the approved project funding limits.
PROJECT TIMELINE
After project approval, in the spring of 2007 KTC personnel will travel to each region of the state to gather and confirm trail characteristic information. KTC volunteers will also contact park managers and user groups to assist in the gathering of trail characteristic information. Once the trail inventory is completed, the map and brochure will be designed and printed. This phase is expected to be completed by the summer of 2007.
