Volunteers wearing T-shirts and smiles are busy helping build a home for a hardworking, low-income family. It’s a familiar scene every Saturday at Habitat for Humanity building sites across the country. But what about the unsung heroes, the landscapers who lay sod for children’s play areas and plant gardens that turn affordable houses into sources of neighborhood pride? On Saturday, a legion of landscape volunteers from Sunbelt Rentals will descend on a Habitat Orlando home site in a new program that gives employees hands-on training for the equipment the company rents on a daily basis. Sunbelt employees and their family members will lay sod, create gardens, spread mulch, plant trees and clean overgrowth. Sunbelt, based in Charlotte, NC, picked Orlando as one of several test sites throughout the Southeast United States. “What better way to train our employees on the equipment we rent to customers, than to put them to work on a real jobsite?” said Steve DeMonbreun, Sunbelt Rentals Equipment Training Manager. “And what better reward for their hard day’s work, than to help such a great organization further its mission of providing housing to families in our community.” Habitat Orlando Executive Director Dee Danmeyer said her agency is thrilled for the help. “For Sunbelt Rentals to present this project idea to us was a gift,” Danmeyer said. “They developed a creative way to train their staff, and in the process will put the finishing touches on this family’s home.” About Habitat for Humanity Orlando.
