Aloe vera is a perennial plant with yellow flowers and it’s tough, fleshy, spearlike leaves can grow up to 20" long. Only the leaves are used for medicine. The clear, thick gel found in the inner part of the leaf is commonly used for minor cuts and burns. The bitter yellow juice found between the gel and the outer skin of the leaf is dried and used for laxative and other purposes. Angelica, Korean Angelica gigas B 5' $3.25 A handsome tall purple colored plant with large leaves and purple flowers. ANISE-HYSSOP Anise-Hyssop Agastache foeniculum P 3' $3.25 The long spikes of purple and blue flowers last well into the summer. Anise-Hyssop will self sow. The foliage has a pleasant mint-like scent and the leaves may be used fresh or dried to flavor tea, cakes, breads, meat and poultry. Aloe ANGELICA Angelica Angelica archangelica B 5' $3.25 Angelica has dark green, glossy compound leaves. It grows in shade or partial sun and flowers in midsummer and will reseed the next year. Monarda didyma is famous as Selection the source of “Oswego Tea”, named after an area of New York near Lake Ontario, where it grew abundantly. Leaves are infused as tea, and give the Earl Grey tea flavor to these drinks. Average height of plant in Minnesota (Zone 3-4) 2 Artemisia, Peach Artemisia ‘Peach’ P 2' $3.25 Peach Artemisia is similar to Silver Bouquet but is more compact and has better flower heads for drying. Basil Genovese BASIL Basil, Genovese Ocimum basilicum ‘Genovese’ A 30" A favorite for pesto, this hybrid variety of Genovese basil has shown very good resistance to fusarium. It is tall and slow to bolt with large, dark green, slightly puckered leaves about 3-4" long. It is an Italian Basil variety. 4-Pack $4.75 Single $3.00 Basil, Greek Mini Ocimum basilicum minimum A 9" Basil Ararat $3.00 Greek Mini stays compact and uniform without pruning. Tiny leaves are fragrant and tasty. It grows well in pots on the deck or patio. Greek Mini basil needs good drainage. Basil, Ararat Ocimum basilicum ‘Ararat’ A 2' $3.00 Strong sweet flavor with a licorice overtone. A perfect basil for salads, pestos and tomato dishes. Foliage has purple markings. Camphor Basil Basil, Cinnamon Ocimum basilicum ‘Cinnamon’ A 2' $3.00 Greek Mini Basil Cinnamon basil is compact with pointed green leaves and light lavender blossoms. Leaves are a nice addition for a flavored basil vinegar. Basil, Lemon Mrs. Burns Ocimum basilicum ‘Mrs. Burns’ A 2’ $3.00 This higly scented lemon basil is excellent with larger leaves and more growht than the standard lemon basil. Leaves are 3” long and pointed. Floewrs are pink in the summer. Basil, Lime Ocimum americanum A 2' $3.00 Cinnamon Basil Columnar Basil Lime basil, a nice addition to the herb garden, is similar to lemon basil, but has dark green small leaves. The aroma is a sweet citrus and is used to flavor fish and salads. Basil, Columnar Ocimum basilicum ‘Greek Columnar’ A 3' $3.00 A tall narrow growing basil with small leaves. Ideal to grow in containers. 3 Basil, Magical Michael Ocimum basilicum ‘Magical Michael’ A 15" $3.00 Basil, Thai Sweet Ocimum basilicum ‘Citriodorum’ A 18" $3.00 Magical Michael is a uniform basil with rich oils, aroma and the flavor of sweet basil. It has dark green leaves producing interesting compact purple and white flowers. Thai basil is more vigorous and weather resistant than most lemon basil varieties. Thai Sweet Basil Magical Michael Basil Basil, Napoletano Ocimum basilicum ‘Napoletano’ A 2' $3.00 BAY PLANT Bay Plant Laurus nobilis TP $10.00 A basil with deeply crinkled leaves and a sweet rich flavor when added to pasta, rice and sauces. We use the large leaves of this basil instead of lettuce on BLT sandwiches since one leaf will measure at least 4" long. A small shrub that should be grown in a pot during the summer and brought indoors for the winter. It does very well indoors. This is the bay that is used in cooking soups and stews. BEAN, SCARLET RUNNER Bean, Scarlet Runner Phaseolus coccineus A 6-8' $3.00 The Scarlet Runner Bean has scarlet flowers against green heartshaped foliage. Beans are edible and delicious when young. Napoletano Basil Basil, Red Rubin Ocimum basilicum ‘Red Rubin’ A 2' $3.00 Strong flavor for use in purple pesto. It is a vigorous and colorful basil. Scarlet Runner Bean BERGAMOT Bergamot/Bee Balm Monarda didyma P 3' Siam Queen Basil $3.25 Basil, Siam Queen Ocimum basilicum ‘Siam Queen’ A 2' $3.00 A very robust looking plant with large edible leaves and thick stems. Use fresh in Thai green curries and Vietnamese noodle soups. Bergamot is attractive to bees and hummingbirds with the plants flowering in July and August. The flowers are a focal point in the garden when in bloom in mid-summer. Bergamot was once widely used by native Americans. It was introduced to the early colonists by the Oswego Indians and Oswego tea was made by colonists during the time of the Boston Tea Party. The pink, red and white flowers smell pleasantly of oranges. They are a nice addition to the flower border. A small handful of fresh leaves in 8 ounces of boiling water make a refreshing and relaxing tea. 4 ‘Alba’ – white flowers ‘Gardenview Scarlet’ – red scarlet flowers It is best pruned to the ground in spring. Butterfly Bush, Nanho Blue Buddleia davidiii ‘Nanho Blue’ P 5-6' $5.00 Fragrant magenta-purple flowers on a nicely spreading shrub with attractive small blue-green foliage. Full sun. Butterfly Bush, Honeycomb Buddleia x weyeriana ‘Honeycomb’ P 4-6' White Bergamot (alba) $5.00 Bergamot, Lemon Monarda citriodora A 2' $3.25 This introduction is a beautiful yellow buddleia. The cream-yellow buds open to yellow flowers with a deep orange eye. Flowers are large, fragrant and quite prolific. An annual bergamot grown for its pink and white spotted flowers with lemon-scented foliage. Lemon bergamot is from the southwestern United States, where the leaves are used in teas. It is a favorite attraction for the hummingbirds and bees. CALENDULA Calendula Lemon Bergamot Calendula, Erfurter Orangefarbigen Calendula officinalis A 2' $3.00 BORAGE Borage, Blue Borago officinalis A 2' $3.00 Grow Borage in a well-drained soil in full sun. Flowers are large and bright orange. It is heavy with petals and has both dark and light centers. A European variety bred for medicinal use. Its large flowers are rich in carotenoids and resin. Excellent for salves, tinctures and oils. The petals were used to color butter and cheese; it was also added to salads. At one time it was used as a substitute for the costly saffron. CARYOPTERIS Caryopteris ‘Blue Mist’ Caryopteris x clandonensis ‘Blue Mist’ TP 3' $3.25 A compact shrub with foliage that is silvery green. Leaves are aromatic with small blue flowers. If mulched in early November, it is hardy in Minnesota and colder climates. The lavender-blue flowers are produced abundantly in late summer, providing a vivid splash of color late in the season. Blue Borage BUTTERFLY BUSH Butterfly Bush, Summer Rose Buddleia davidii ‘Summer Rose’ P 4-5' $5.00 Fragrant mauve-rose inflorescences are quite large, up to 18” in length. They are borne in profusion through the season on compact plants. It is a good cut flower and attractive to butterflies. 5 CATMINT Catmint, Faassen’s Nepeta x faassenii P 18" $3.25 CHIVES Chives, Garlic Allium tuberosum P 18" $3.25 A small ornamental form with lavender-blue flowers and graywhite leaves. Use as a ground cover or in rock gardens. This popular ornamental has less effect on cats and has no medicinal properties. Garlic chives have stiff leaves, flat and strap-shaped. Season foods with its mild garlic flavor. CATNIP Catnip Nepeta cataria P 2' $3.00 Chives, Onion Allium schoenoprasum ‘Dainty’ P 10" $3.25 Dainty is compact and very showy in spring. A perennial from Europe, catnip has naturalized in many parts of the United States. Catnip has a bitter, camphor-like fragrance. Cats are attracted by the odor either fresh or dried. It has fuzzy heart shaped leaves up to 2" long. Its main use is for tea as a sedative. CHAMOMILE Chamomile, Bodegold Matricaria recutita ‘Bodegold’ A 18" $3.25 Bodegold has large blossoms and this particular variety has a high content of essential oil. Onion Chives Chamomile, German Matricaria recutita A 15" $3.25 CILANTRO Cilantro, Leisure Coriandrum sativum A 2-3' 4-Pack $3.25 German chamomile has a sweet apple scent that makes a nice tea. Call it cilantro, coriander or Chinese parsley, it is commonly grown for fresh leaves. The plants form a low rosette of leaves then stalks of small white flowers. CLEOME Cleome Cleome hassleriana A German Chamomile 3' $3.00 Cleome are heat and drought tolerant plants that are topped with colorful clusters of 6-8" blossoms from midsummer until frost. Plant in full sun. CHERVIL Chervil Anthriscus cerefolium A 12" $3.00 Chervil has an anise flavor. It is a shadeloving, cool season herb used fresh in salads, omelettes and herb butter. Plants will self sow for a fall and spring crop. Cleome Chervil 6 CLOVE PINK Clove Pink Dianthus caryophyllus P 15" $3.00 CUPHEA Cuphea Cuphea ignea TP 2' $3.25 A mixture of pink, red and white double flowers. It was mainly used as a flavoring for beverages, liqueurs, wine cups and vinegar. The fresh flowers garnish soups, stews, salads and sandwiches. Cuphea (Batwing Plant) is a multi-flowering plant that keeps blooming until frost. It prefers full sun. Last summer we planted Cuphea and it grows nicely in containers and blooms all summer. Hummingbirds are attracted to the rich nectar in the flowers. COMFREY Comfrey, Russian Symphytum x uplandicum P 3' $3.50 Large rapid growing plant that will grow almost anywhere in sun or shade. Comfrey is deep-rooted. Used externally as a poultice, since the leaves contain a compound that heals bruises and wounds. Cuphea Twinkle Pink Cuphea Cuphea, Twinkle Pink Cuphea ‘Twinkle Pink’ A 1' $3.25 Comfrey Purple Coneflower The color is close to red in strong light with small pinkish purple flowers sitting on the tips of sturdy stems and green foliage. It is drought tolerant and does not like wet soil. Pinch tips back to produce a bushier plant. CONEFLOWER Coneflower, Purple Echinacea purpurea P 3' $3.25 DILL Dill, Fernleaf Anethum graveolens ‘Fernleaf’ A 18" 4-Pack $3.25 Highly regarded medicinal herb used in strengthening the immune system. The purple coneflower is an attractive herb with rich reddish-purple flowers in late summer. This dwarf, very compact dill requires no staking in the garden and will not topple over, making it perfect for patio containers. The plants will flower later, allowing for an extended ornamental period. ‘Fernleaf’ can also be used for recipes calling for dill in cooking. CORDAO Cordao Leonotis nepetaefolium A 6' $3.25 Dill, Hercules Anethum graveolens ‘Hercules’ A 3' 4-Pack $3.25 A newer variety that is slow to flower, foliage stays green longer. Hercules is fast growing and a favorite to use in pickles. An ornamental plant with tall whorled spikes with long-tubed and curving orange flowers. Hummingbirds love them. Plant early since they require a long growing season to fully develop. fresh for onion flavor or cooked as scallions. EVENING PRIMROSE Evening Primrose Oenothera biennis B 30" $3.25 Evening primrose, named for its habit of opening its blooms at dusk, grows in full sun. It is a tall plant with scented flowers. Cordao 7 FENNEL Fennel Foeniculum vulgare A 3' 4-Pack $3.25 Germander, Upright Teucrium chamaedrys P 10" $3.25 Small dark green glossy leaves make this plant suitable for an edging plant. Germander grows in a well-drained soil in full sun. Fennel seeds will settle the stomach and aid in digestion. Sprinkle seeds on pizza, add to spaghetti sauce and pork chops. Fennel, Bronze Foeniculum vulgare ‘Rubrum’ A 3' $3.00 A nice landscape plant with attractive copper-colored foliage. Add snipped leaves to carrots, potatoes and salads. Fennel, Zefa Fino Foeniculum vulgare azoricum A 2' 4-Pack $3.25 Upright Germander A large tender bulb, with a mild anise flavor that forms a bulb at the base. It has a mild licorice flavor that is delicious in salads. GLOBE AMARANTH Globe Amaranth Gomphrena globosa A 2' 4-Pack $3.25 FEVERFEW Feverfew Tanacetum parthenium B 2' $3.25 Pick flower heads in summer for bouquets and if the seed heads are left it will return the next year from seedlings. Feverfew is used as a preventative for migraine headaches. Globe-shaped flowers measure 1". Plants are compact and continuous blooming. The pack of mixed colors contains one plant of pink, purple, red and bicolor. GERANIUM Geranium, ‘Max Frei’ Geranium sanguineum ‘Max Frei’ P 8-12” $11.50 This hardy geranium forms a nice mound of foliage with attractive, finely divided leaves. Flowers freely most of the summer with deep magenta pink saucer shaped flowers. It tolerates full sun to partial shade. Spread is 12-15” Bicolor Globe Amaranth Pink Globe Amaranth GERMANDER Germander, Creeping Teucrium canadense P 8" $3.25 Creeping Germander makes a fine ground cover in the sun. Plant in knot gardens or use as a border plant since it can be trimmed into small hedges. Red Globe Amaranth Purple Globe Amaranth GOLDEN VINE Golden Vine, Variegated Solanum jasminoides ‘Variegata’ Creeping Germander TP $3.25 In the greenhouse Golden Vine blooms during the winter. It features a twining, trailing habit, white variegation with a bright pink tinge. 8 HELIOTROPE LAVENDER Lavender, English Lavandula angustifolia P 2' $3.50 Lavender is aromatic with a sweet scent. Fresh flowers are added to jams, ice creams and vinegar. Harvest the blooms just as they open. White Heliotrope Heliotrope, White Heliotropum arborescens A 12" $3.25 A white flowering variety of heliotrope that blooms continuously throughout the summer. Flowers are extremely fragrant. HOPS Hops, Golden Humulus lupulus ‘Aureus’ P 12' $5.00 Hidcote Lavender Lavender, Fringed Lavandula dentata TP 2' $3.50 Leaves are yellow maturing to dark green. Small hop blossoms are used for sleep pillows and beer making. Grow the plants on trellises. This attractive, tender perennial needs to be grown indoors during the winter. Plant in containers for constant bloom foliage. Golden Hops Fringed Lavender HORSERADISH Horseradish Armoracia rusticana P 30" $3.25 Lavender, Hidcote Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ P 2' $3.50 A strongly scented plant with a compact growth habit. It has the deepest blue flowers. This perennial has leaves up to 3' long. Grind the roots into sauce for roast beef, ham and hamburger. Harvest horseradish in late fall. Lavender, Munstead Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ P 30" $3.50 Munstead has small leaves and strongly scented, lavender-blue flowers on long stems. It is one of the hardiest lavender to grow. LEMON BALM Lemon Balm Melissa officinalis P 30" $3.25 Lemon balm, with its lemon-scented, bitter leaves, has many uses in salads, sandwiches, soups, butter, fish, egg dishes, sauces, jellies and herbal vinegar. Horseradish 9 MARIGOLD Marigold, Lemon Gem Tagetes tenuifolia A 15" 4-Pack $3.25 Old fashioned flowers cover this plant in masses of small bright yellow single blossoms. Lemon Gem is edible in vegetables, pasta or green salads. Plant these small marigolds in a window box for a display of beautiful flowers and dark green lacy leaves. They make a great addition to any container garden. Lemon Verbena LEMON VERBENA Lemon Verbena Aloysia triphylla TP 3' $3.25 Lemon verbena has the best lemon flavor of any herb. Use in tea, vinegar and chicken. A favorite herb at the Farm, it will perk up anyone who smells the lovely fragrance. Lemon Gem Marigold Red Gem Marigold LICORICE Licorice, Dwarf Plecostachys serpyllifolia TP 10" $3.25 Marigold, Tangerine Gem Tagetes tenuifolia A 15" 4-Pack $3.25 Similar to Lemon Gem but with bright orange flowers. Dwarf marigolds are attractive planted as borders around the garden or in pots. Dwarf Licorice is a mounding plant that is tidy and compact – nice to grow in miniature landscapes. The stems are soft with tiny round, silvery leaves. Marigold, Red Gem Tagetes tenuifolia A 15" 4-Pack $3.25 The Gem Marigold forms mounds of foliage with many flowers all summer. Vibrant red blooms are edged with a rim of gold and set off by a golden center over the finely cut foliage. MARJORAM Marjoram, Golden Origanum vulgare ‘Dr. Ietswaart’ P 6" $3.25 Ornamental mat forming herb with tiny round crinkled greengold leaves. It requires some shade and may need extra moisture during hot and dry summers. Lovage LOVAGE Lovage Levisticum officinalis P 4' $3.25 Lovage grows in sun or partial shade. It has a sweet celery flavor to use in soup, stews, salads and seasoning blends. Lovage has a nice flavor when used fresh and is easily dried and stored in containers. Golden Marjoram 10 Marjoram, Sweet Origanum majorana A 10" $3.00 Use sweet marjoram in poultry, sausage, sauces and herb butters. The mild sweet flavor enhances vinegars also. Small white flowers appear in late summer. Kentucky Colonel Spearmint Lavender Mint Mentha piperita lavandula P 2' $3.25 Lavender mint is very aromatic with a heavy lavender fragrance. This mint is excellent in fruit dishes and fresh flower arrangements. Milk Thistle Lime Mint MILK THISTLE Milk Thistle Silybum marianum A 3' $3.25 Mentha piperita citrata sp. P 15" $3.25 Citrus aroma nice for tea blends. The foliage is cupped with an irregular shape. Round, dark green leaves and have a distinctive lime flavor. This medicinal plant is large and showy with shiny, spiny leaves. Orangemint Mentha x piperita citrata P 2' $3.25 MINT Chocolate Mint Mentha piperita sp. P 15" $3.25 Foliage has bronze-purple leaves and a pleasing sweet citrus aroma. Good with fruit drinks and iced tea. Baked squash sprinkled with mint and orange juice is delicious. A striking dark leaved variety of peppermint with a strong, heavy aroma. Bronze green leaves with a strong peppermint flavor. Orangemint Peppermint Mentha x piperita P 30" Chocolate Mint $3.25 A vigorous grower with reddish purple toothed leaves and stems. Flavorful in tea. Pineapple Mint Curly Mint Mentha spicata ‘Crispa’ P 18" $3.25 Mentha suaveolens ‘Variegata’ TP 18" $3.25 A most attractive mint with white variegation. Curly mint is attractive with its strongly crinkled leaves at the margins with a hint of apple fragrance. It is a variety of spearmint. Kentucky Colonel Spearmint M. spicata ‘Kentucky Colonel’ P 30" $3.25 Kentucky Colonel is attractive with wrinkled leaves and an excellent flavor. Use in making mint juleps as well as in cooking. 11 Pineapple Mint NASTURTIUM Scotch Mint Mentha sp. P 2' $3.25 Nasturtium, Alaska Tropaeolum majus A 8" 4-Pack $3.25 Scotch mint grows well in a container with other cooking herbs. This large-leaved cultivar contains a heavy amount of mint oil and gives a nice flavor to tea, fresh or dried. Spearmint, Jim’s Mentha spicata P 30" $3.25 Alaska is a bush type of nasturtium with variegated leaves. Brilliant colored single 2" flowers in yellow, crimson, orange, salmon and cherry cover the plants in summer. Grows well in containers; flowers are deliciously edible. A favorite for mint jelly, sauce and tea. Jim selected this old fashioned variety of spearmint. The flavor is mild and delicious in tea, fruit salad dressing, desserts, mint juleps. MORNING GLORY Morning Glory, Cardinal Ipomoea x multifida A 6-10' $3.00 Alaska Nasturtium Trailing Nasturtium The cut foliage on these long vines boast bright red 1" blooms on foliage that fills out more quickly that most other vine plants. The foliage is an emerald green and is shaped like palm leaves. It will flower until frost. Nasturtium, Empress of India Tropaeolum sp. A 12" 4-Pack $3.25 Foliage on this variety is a deep purple, almost blue with flowers in colors of deep orange. Ideal for containers or baskets. Cardinal Morning Glory Grandpa Ott Morning Glory Morning Glory, Grandpa Ott Ipomoea purpurea A 8-10' $3.00 Empress of India Nasturtium Strawberries & Cream Nasturtium A morning glory brought to the United States from Bavaria. Flowers are spectacular bearing deep, velvety, royal purple blooms about 2" across. In the center is a dark wine red star. Morning Glory, Heavenly Blue Ipomoea tricolor ‘Heavenly Blue’ A 6-8' $3.00 Morning Glory plants are fast growing with sky-blue flowers. They are great to train for trellises or fences. Flowers are 4-6" trumpet-shaped with white throats. Nasturtium, Strawberries & Cream Tropaeolum sp. A 12" 4-Pack $3.25 A stunning collection of rich colors in a peachy cream with four large strawberry blotches at the base of each petal. Nasturtium, Trailing Mix Tropaeolum majus A 3' 4-Pack $3.25 Old-fashioned trellis type with large fragrant single and semidouble flowers. Colors are bright and mixed. Heavenly Blue 12 Nepeta ‘Souvenir D’Andre Chaudron’ Nepeta ‘Souvenir D’Andre Chaudron’ TP $3.25 C Oregano, Greek Origanum vulgare hirtum TP 10" $3.25 This relative to the catnip produces 1" long pale blue blossoms on upright stems and attracts hummingbirds to the garden. Leaves are gray-green, pointed and large. This small growing oregano is excellent in pizza, tomato sauces, herb blends, meats, shellfish and eggplant dishes. Greek Oregano has a distinct, pungent aroma and flavor. Leaves are slightly hairy with white flowers. Souvenir D’Andre Chaudron Nepeta Fragrant Cloud Nicotiana Greek Oregano NICOTIANA Nicotiana, Fragrant Cloud Nicotiana x sanderae ‘Fragrant Cloud’ A 3' $3.00 Oregano, Herrenhausen Origanum laevigatum x O. vulgare P 2' $3.25 A very attractive plant with sweetly scented flowers that are large and pure white. Very showy, spires of blossoms will continue flowering with occasional dead-heading. The large leaves at the base form a nice backdrop. A variety of oregano that has a sweet scent and dark green fragrant foliage with a mounding to slightly sprawling habit. Foliage turns a deep burgundy in fall. Flowers appear in July and bloom until frost. Oregano, Hopleys Origanum laevigatum ‘Hopleys’ TP 30" $3.25 Hopleys is more vigorous than other species and all its parts are larger. Spikes grow to nearly an inch long. Colorful purple clumps form at the ends of the stems. It can be used fresh or dried, keeping in mind that less should be used when it is dried. Many are grown for their plant habit and flower color. To bring rosemary indoors in northern climates it is best to grow it in a pot outside in the summer and then bring indoors for the cold months. Plants should be repotted at least once or twice a year to maintain new growth. Keep in a south or west window and water plants when dry.
