*** HELP ILPH NZ TO GO THAT EXTRA MILE *** WE’RE ALMOST THERE -check out our Progress Map at www.horsetalk.co.nz/ilph FUNDRAISING SUCCESS STORY The challenge set for ILPH NZ by ILPH HQ was to ACTIVELY fundraise at least $12,000.00 between January & October 2003. If we succeeded, HQ pledged to Double Our Money. And the good news is -we’ve done it ! Thanks to our brilliant members and supporters. The main source of income was the Virtual Reality Ride & Drive featured on the Website Map, plus “Friends of the Family “ horse sponsorships, horse gear sales and Special Events. Huge thanks to those special members who ran an Event for us. The most recent was a Show Jumping Practice Day in September hosted by St Peter’s School Cambridge, organised by Kay Hogan. Equally huge thanks to all members who donated generous quantities of Extra Miles and/or put themselves “On The Map”. Last but not least, huge thanks to everyone who donated or purchased horse gear. Please keep it coming. Also please keep the Mileage Donations coming – we’re stuck at Timaru ! FAMILY UPDATE BOB THE GOB’s NEWS Bob the Gob, the big rescued Clydesdale, is proving a great hit at Waiuku. David reports that visitors arrive from the road asking if they can see him. Bob has his own ideas about his choice of paddock and has cost David a fortune in Bob-proof fencing. His latest escapade was to get stuck in a fence when he rolled, but he stayed put and waited for David to cut him loose – not a scratch on the horse, but the fence had to be restrung.Fortunately David still loves him GEORGIA’s JOB Kaimanawa Georgia had baby-sitting duties in the home paddock recently. Her job was to keep big grey Milly calm and discourage her from fence-walking. Pointless waste of energy + eating-time, said Georgia. Milly arrived with chronic foot problems, which Xraay showed would be ongoing. However, with careful management and good hoofcare, she can hopefully enjoy a good quality of life. WELFARE UPDATE By Sandra Shearer Chief Welfare Officer The wild un-spring-like weather has brought problems with floods, mud and lack of grazing in many areas. Fortunately ILPH NZ had a barn full of hay, and this has been put to good use. Some owners think that if it rains, they need not worry about water supplies to paddocks. Not so.I have personally filled water buckets in Hamilton, Auckland & even Opotiki. The Duty of Care message is apparently still not getting through. The main call outs however have been for skinny horses, especially where owners have tried to Winter over too many horses on inadequate grazing, with inadequate funds for hay and hard-feed. Sometimes we can help. We can sometimes re-home unwanted ‘Skinnies’ and we can often organise emergency hay or grazing. If, however, the owner cannot or will not see that there is a problem, the case is referred to MAF or the SPCA for official action. ****************************************************** Equine Welfare Concerns? Old age finally overtook them and they were put down together and buried together at Sharleen Adams’ farm in Pukekohe. Sharleen and her family had given the old boys a wonderful home for the past 5 years. They were cherished and will be greatly missed. Sparky, as older ILPH members may recall, was the Milky Bar Kid’s pony on TV Ads. Fame is a fleeting thing, and he came to ILPH as a Founder case. As did Puffin, who arrived soon after. Both ponies were considered geriatric when Marilyn joined ILPH NZ in ‘95, so they have had a good innings on borrowed time thanks to the Yarndleys and the Adams. Photo: Puffin, Sparky & Family 2003 INTERNATIONAL WELFARE WORRIES Animal Welfare Concerns about the Live Export Trade was highlighted this year by the “Ship of Shame” – 50,000 sheep at sea with no place to land. Pressure on the Australian Government was such that in October John Howard’s government announced that an official enquiry would be held into the Live Export Trade. ILPH hopes that the European Union may take heed. ILPH HQ reports that draft EU regulations could allow the resumption of the Live Slaughter Horse Trade from UK to mainland Europe. This grim trade was outlawed in Britain in 1937, after 10 years fierce lobbying from ILPH. Its resumption would be a disgrace. For more information on this issue and a petition to sign, visit the ILPH UK Website www.ilph.org To urge the Australian Government to ban its Live Export Trade, you can check out www.animalsaustralia.org JUNIOR SUPPORTERS CLUB – THE PONY MAD CLUB. For over 10 years now, the Warkworth-based Pony Mad Club has loyally supported ILPH NZ. Club Organiser Jennifer Pearce, writes her own story: “Being a 12yr old horse crazy kid, I became frustrated that there weren’t any NZ horsy publications catering for horse-lovers like myself, so being creative and having a natural talent, apparent at 13 months old, for typing, I set about making my own, which I called “Pony Mad “ and sold in aid of ILPH NZ. In November 1994, I decided to turn this fundraising into a club via a magazine to hopefully reach members further afield. This was the start of the Pony Mad Club. With the help of then ILPH Administra-tor, Elizabeth McFarlane, we set about recruiting Junior members by putting a notice in the ILPH News. This year, the club will celebrate its 9th birthday with over 75 members aged between 5–18 spreading from Kaitaia to Oamaru. Over the years, membership steadily increased via advertising in other publications and stalls at market days. It has blossomed since seeking the help of many saddlerys around the country who kindly display Pony Mad Club info pamphlets with the offer of their business featuring in the club’s magazine “Pony Tales”. Pony Tales has grown from a 3 A4 page stapled mag to a 20 page A5 size containing articles about horse care, famous horses, breed profiles, horse sense, equine health, tips, advice, competitions with cool prizes & ribbons, plus many member contribu-tions like drawings, puzzles, poems, letters, jokes, and quizzes for which members gain points towards prizes. A percentage of each member’s Sub is donated to the ILPH and so far the PMC has raised $4,000 and still counting! Membership costs $10.00 for 6mnths, $20.00 for 1yr or $35.00 for 2yrs. Write to; Pony Mad Club C/-Miss J Pearce, Matakana Valley Rd, RD 5, Warkworth. Sorry, no Internet access – so kids, get your pens out. Remember pens ? THE CROFT KAIMANAWAS Robyn Sisley reports a hard muddy Winter, with limited grass and lots of hay to buy. But there is good news too: the two fillies, Holly and Summer, have left The Croft recently to start life as riding ponies, in the hands of two nice Cambridge ladies who graze together. Robyn tells us that she has never had to advertise a pony – when the time is right, the right person comes along. Sadly, the time also came to say goodbye to two of the older mares from the 1997 muster Shari & Princess, whose old injuries and health problems finally caught up with them. They were put down together peacefully at home. The band now consists of 4 mares and 5 geldings – Hercules is in the majority sex at last, but he still remains bonded with Pinta, and distrusts the big rough boys, especially Chester who is a bigger heavier type of Kaimanawa. Storm (2) is now bigger than Tussock (age 3). He is maturing and has stopped his coltish biting – of Robyn at least. Shadow is aptly named – he is still a baby and follows the other around timidly. He is very sweet. All four boys will feature in Robyn’s Kaimanawa Presentations at The Croft this year. They are learning how to stand, circle, and understand human body language. Pinta has been having problems with her back, and needs ongoing therapy. She is on Brookby Herbs “Freemover”, as is Hercules who also got stiff this Winter. The Croft is open all Summer, for Group Visits by arrangement. If you can get a group together, even if they are not specially interested in horses, Robyn’s introduction to Kaimanawa Wild Horses has proven general appeal for young and old, as a piece of New Zealand history. And of course her home-made lunches are a legend. For more information and bookings, phone Robyn on 07 843 5360. You can sponsor a pony on line at The Croft Kaimanawas for $20.00 through ILPH NZ. THE LEG UP TRUST Horses Helping Young People In a previous ILPH NZ News we mentioned Ros Rowe’s courageous venture in the Hawke’s Bay: Horse Therapy for At Risk Youth. The Leg Up Trust is based at Te Awanga Horse Treks, near Cape Kidnappers. Ros and her Team run holiday courses for young abuse victims and youth on the brink of a life of crime. Results are amazingly encouraging, as the youngsters begin to communicate first with the horses, and eventually with the horse handlers. The fledgling Trust, like ILPH NZ, struggles for funding, but recently the have received a much needed Leg Up from various Community Trusts, the Pub Charities and generous individuals. They still need more funds and, most desperately, more grazing. Ros really deserves all the help she can get so, if this strikes a chord with you, please phone Leg Up Trust on 06 875 0541. Ros reports that the horses know if someone is using drugs. They become restless and agitated. Ros suggests the police might consider recruiting some “sniffer horses” . . . BROOKBY HERBS SUPPORTS ILPH This year’s pilot scheme of Brookby Herbs donating a small percentage of profit from their “FREEMOVER” and “HERBAL HEALTH” products may well be extended in the future. Jackie Rive, Brookby Herbs Director is enthusiastic about helping a worthy horse cause, and is also providing us with a good supply of their excellent product for our Rescue Horses. You can find out more about Herbal Remedies for Horses on their Website www.brookbyherbs.co.nz or phone Jackie on 09 292 8110 ILPH NZ NOTICE BOARD Christmas Cards now on sale, with a lovely new design by Simone James “Running Free” plus last year’s left overs.
