Part 1 General
REFERENCES
Standards of the following as referenced:

GROUND FACE CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS
SUBMITTALS
Blok Tek lab report:
1. A certificate of compliance with ASTM C-90 will be available which will include compressive
strength, absorption percentage, material density and fire rating.
2. Basis of certification: Laboratory tests on like units in accordance with ASTM C-140.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
Mock-ups:
1. Construct 4’0” long by 4’0” high sample wall panel, using all of the same components that will be
used in actual wall construction.
2. Indicate the following:
a. Full color range and texture of units
b. Bonding and reinforcement
c. Mortar colors and joint tooling
d. Flashing (NCMA TEK 19-4A)
e. Water-repellent coatings (if specified)
f. Overall workmanship

STORAGE & HANDLING
Storage and protection:
1. All Ground Face concrete masonry units (CMUs) shall be delivered to the jobsite on covered
pallets.
2. Transport and handle material in such manner as to prevent damage.
UNIT MASONRY
3. Cover units with non-staining waterproof covering.
4. Installation of wet units is prohibited.
5. Pallets are to be stored in single stacks on level ground. Double stacking cubes should be avoided
to avoid staining caused by wood pallets.

Part 2 Products
MATERIALS
Ground Face architectural concrete masonry units as manufactured by New Holland Concrete:
1. Load bearing units: ASTM C-90 Lightweight concrete masonry units.
2. Aggregates used in Ground Face CMUs meet all requirements of ASTM C-331.
3. Water absorption: In accordance with ASTM C-90.
4. Compressive strength: Average compressive strength of three units meets ASTM C-90 specifications.
5. Ground Face CMUs for exterior construction will be manufactured with water-repellent admixture for the purpose of controlling
efflorescence and limiting water permeation.
6. All Ground Face CMUs exceed the fire resistance ratings outlined in Table 6.0 of NCMA TEK 7-1.
7. Ground Face CMUs meet the shrinkage requirements of ASTM C-90 as outlined in ASTM C-426 Standard Test Method for
Linear Drying Shrinkage of Concrete Masonry Units.
8. All Ground face surfaces shall be smooth and consistent from end to end. ASTM C-90, paragraph 7 shall apply for allowable
imperfections.
Part 3 Execution
INSTALLATION
1. Lay units using the best concrete masonry practices.
2. Align units level, plumb and true.
3. Carefully tool 3/8” wide joints on the finished side of the wall. Raked joints are not recommended.
4. Draw blocks from more than one pallet at a time during installation.
5. All units for exterior use are to be laid with Master Builders Rheopel Water Repellant Admixture in the mortar following
manufacturer’s instructions.
PREPARATION
Protection:
1. Keep walls dry during construction by covering at the end of each work period with non-staining waterproof membrane
covering. Overhang at least 2’ on each side of the wall.
2. Care should be taken to keep the walls clean of mortar, grout and other stains.
CLEANING
Acid:
1. No acid or acid-based solutions shall be used in cleaning Ground Face concrete masonry units.
2. A detergent masonry cleaner shall be used following the manufacturer’s instructions and the surface shall be thoroughly
rinsed with clean water.
3. Do not allow excess mortar or smears to harden on finished surfaces.
4. High-pressure power washing should not be used.
5. Cleaners should be applied to a test area to verify product intensity.
SEALERS
1. Factory-applied sealer shall be a modified acrylic resin applied at a thickness of six mills.
