Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with assorted opportunities to further develop
their Chinese language and culture proficiencies across the three communicative modes:
interpersonal (listening, speaking, reading and writing skills), interpretive (listening and
reading skills), presentational (speaking and writing skills), and the five goal areas
(communications, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities) as outlined in
the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. Students will master
intermediate-level Chinese language structures, expressive styles, and conventions of
communication through topics reflecting multiple aspects of contemporary and historical
Chinese society and culture. Ample authentic literature will be used to support the text
books for the enhancement of students’ up-to-date knowledge about Chinese culture and
language.

Course content reflects the intellectual interest shared by the students and the teacher for
the appreciation and awareness of Chinese culture. It includes: modern communication
tool like internet and celluloid phone, education, movies, tea cultures, family heritage,
food, economy, spring festivals, traffic, job hunting, banking, environmental pollution,
traveling, sports, Chinese medicine, and Chinese cities, etc.

Instructional materials

“新实用汉语课本” New Practical Chinese Reader Book Three, “中文天地”, “走进中国”
Into China,“汉语阅读教程” HANYU YUEDU JIAOCHENG, “汉语口语速成”Language
Lab, and “HSK 快乐阅读” are the primary text books. Other materials include signs,
advertisements, e-mails, posters, videos, films, news broadcasted, written text excerpted
or adapted from newspapers and magazines, contemporary literature, letters, and reports.
All the teaching materials are scaffolded within their Chinese proficiency level to support
students for their better comprehension of Chinese culture and language.

Assessments

Assessments are frequent, varied and explicitly linked to the contents and skills taught in
the classes. During and after this course, students are expected to apply their growing
knowledge of Chinese culture and language to communicative tasks in real life contexts.
Listening, speaking, reading, writing, and keyboard writing skills will all be assessed for
the assurance of their ability to communicate in variety of discourse styles.
Grading Policy:

A: 90-100%
B: 80-89%
C: 70-79%
D: 60-69%
F: below 60%

Students are expected to preview the scheduled lessens before attending each class
session in order to actively participate the learning process. Quizzes can be given at any
class session. Tests will be given after each thematic unit.
