Preface
This document describes the steps for configuring a Canopy SM (subscriber
module) as a client router for member’s access to the MRIC service.
Procedure
The following steps detail the procedure to set up the Canopy SM. Please pay
particular attention to order and detail to minimize support problems.
0) Before you start, be sure to fill out this configuration worksheet, and watch
for the red numbers in the steps below

1) You'll be able to use DHCP on your computer's ethernet interface:
http://www.mric.coop/~toolshed/radios/Canopy/MRIC-Canopy-Standard-Client-Setup v1_1.pdf
2) Plug in the Canopy power supply and connect the “to computer” ethernet
cable to your computer's ethernet port, and the “To Radio” ethernet cable
to an ethernet cable that is connected to the Canopy SM. (Make sure to
turn off the computer's wireless).Open a browser window to
http://169.254.1.1, (the Canopy SM’s default IP)
You'll see the General Status page :
http://www.mric.coop/~toolshed/radios/Canopy/MRIC-Canopy-Standard-Client-Setup v1_1.pdf
3) Using the left-hand menu, go to ”Configuration/General”.
Change the Regional Settings drop down from “None” to “United States”,
and change MAC Control Parameters, 2X Rate from “Enabled” to
“Disabled”.
Make sure to "Save Changes".

4) Next,
use the navigation menu to go to the “Configuration/Radio” page.
5) Deselect all frequencies EXCEPT the frequency the Canopy access
Point is using – see Ref # 1.
6) Set the Color Code – see Ref # 2.
Save changes. Do not reboot yet.

7) Next, use the navigation menu to go to “Configuration/SNMP”.
8) Enter “tuw868mochkl” as the Community String
9) Enter memberID as Site Name – see Ref # 3.
10) Enter member name, member phone #, member email as Site Contact
– see Ref # 4.
11) Enter the street address of the installed Canopy SM as Site Location –
see Ref # 5.
Save changes. Do not reboot

12) Next, use the navigation menu to go to the “Configuration/Protocol
Filtering” page.
13) Select SMB, SNMP, BootP client, BootP server, IPv4 Multicast
Save changes. Do not reboot yet.

14) Next, use the navigation menu to go to the “Configuration/NAT” page.
15) Change the NAT Enable/Disable radio button from “Disabled” to
“Enabled”.
Changing NAT Enable/Disable from “Disabled” to “Enabled” changes the
“Configuration/NAT” page to the following:
http://www.mric.coop/~toolshed/radios/Canopy/MRIC-Canopy-Standard-Client-Setup v1_1.pdf
At the “Configuration/NAT” page:
At the NAT Private Network Interface Configuration,
16) Enter 192.168.1. as IP Address
At the DMZ Host Interface Configuration,
17) Enter 192.168.1.2. as IP Address.
Leave DMZ disabled.
At the DHCP Generic Parameters (towards the bottom of the screen),
18) Change the DHCP Client Enable/Disable radio button from “Enabled”
to “Disabled”
At the NAT Public Network Interface Configuration,
19) Enter Ref # 6 as IP Address.
20) Enter Ref # 7 as Subnet Mask.
21) Enter Ref # 8 as Gateway IP Address.
At the DHCP Server Network Interface Configuration,
22) Enter 192.168.191.3 as DHCP Start IP.
23) Enter 47 as Number of IP’s to Lease
At the Radio Public Network Interface Configuration
24) Enter Ref # 9 as IP Address.
25) Select Interface Enabled.
26) Enter Ref # 10 as Subnet Mask.
27) Enter Ref # 11 as Gateway IP Address.
At the DNS Server Parameters,
28) Select “Set Manually”
29) Enter Ref # 12 as Preferred DNS IP Address.
30) Enter Ref # 13 as Alternate DNS IP Address.
Save changes. Do not reboot yet.

http://www.mric.coop/~toolshed/radios/Canopy/MRIC-Canopy-Standard-Client-Setup v1_1.pdf
Go to the “Configuration/Unit Settings” page:
At the Default plug,
31) Select Set to factory Defaults Upon Default Plug Detection: Enabled
Save changes. Now is the time to reboot!
After the Canopy has fully rebooted (30 seconds), unplug the ethernet cable
from your computer’s ethernet port, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in.
This will release the DHCP assigned IP address and then renew the IP.
Your computer ethernet port will have newly assigned IP of 192.168.191.3.
An alternate method is to open a Command Prompt window, enter
“IPCONFIG /RELEASE” and then enter “IPCONFIG /RENEW”
http://www.mric.coop/~toolshed/radios/Canopy/MRIC-Canopy-Standard-Client-Setup v1_1.pdf
At the browser, enter 192.168.191.1 into the address bar.
Go to the Account page
At the Update Password,
32) Enter “admin” as User
33) Enter Ref # 14 as New Password
34) Enter Ref # 14 as Confirm Password
35) Select Change Password
36) Record all assigned IPAddresses, Names, BoundMAC, Location,
Description, and Passwords on the IPAddress database.
Done!

APPENDIX A – Adding a Second Router
A lot of times, a member’s home network may include another router. In order
to make all of the MRIC Client Routers the same, a second router should
have the following configuration.
Doing anything differently than described here or tampering the above
standard configuration on the MRIC Client Router will cause support
headaches.
So, before connecting a second router to an MRIC Client Router, make sure
to do the following on the second router’s configuration:
1) Set the WAN or Internet address to “Obtain Automaticaly” or “DHCP” or
“Disabled” – we won’t be using it.
2) Set the LAN address to “192.168.191.50” and the LAN netmask to
“255.255.255.0”
3) Disable DHCP server on the LAN
4) Connect the cable from one of the second router’s LAN ports to one of
the MRIC Client Router’s LAN ports.
5) Put black tape over the “WAN” or “Internet” port and the reset button of
the second router so nobody is tempted to use them.
6) If there’s wireless on the second router, make sure the radio channel is
non-overlapping with the MRIC PoP in use, and that the SSID is unique
(use the member’s lastname in case it turns up in a future survey).
7) Secure the router (non-default admin password, wireless encryption) and
record settings.
This way the MRIC Client Router is the gateway, and the second router is
mostly just a switch / Access Point.
If the member has more complex needs, they’d better also have more
complex skills, because MRIC isn’t their home-network support and
management team.
