What is a Wizard? Wizards are tools that help you create a specific document in Word. They all work the same way regardless of the task. Wizards can create faxes, envelopes, memos, and letters. In this exercise you will create your own resume using the resume wizard as well as formatting techniques. Opening the Resume Wizard 1. In Word, click FILE and click NEW. A task pane opens with a selection of document types.

2. Click General Templates in the task pane. A dialog box appears with further selections

3. Click the Other Documents tab.

5. Click Resume Wizard.

4. Click OK to continue.

In each dialog box you will be asked a question. Respond to the question by clicking a button or a check box. In some cases you will be asked to enter information into text boxes. Click NEXT to move to the next dialog box. Click BACK to return to the previous dialog box. Click FINISH when you are ready to see the final product.

In this dialog box you choose one of three basic visual styles for your resume: Professional, Contemporary, or Elegant.

Here you will choose the type of resume you wish to create. Each type may have slightly different headings, or may arrange those headings in a different order.

Enter your name and contact information in any applicable boxes shown here.

This dialog box lets you add or remove specific headings in your resume by checking and unchecking the boxes next to each one.

Less-frequently used headings may be selected from this dialog box.

NOTE: If you do not have information for making a resume but would like to practice, use the example resume at the end of this handout for employment information.

Adding more information The Resume Wizard creates a formatted document using the basic information you provided, but you will still need to change other information in the resume.

Information that should be changed is enclosed in brackets. Click the bracket to select the area to replace, such as [Degree/Major]. Type your specific information, such as BA in Political Science. If you would like more help to complete a specific task, the Office Assistant can provide step-by-step instructions. Press F1 to show the Office Assistant. If you have a heading, such as “Work Experience”, under which you would like to add another section, try copying and pasting the existing information to retain the formatting and then update the information in the new section. Use the Print Preview to get an idea how your resume will look when printed.
