Math-in-CTE Overview

Math-in-CTE is a professional development program developed by the National Research Center of
Career and Technical Education (NRCCTE) and is a curriculum integration model designed to enhance
mathematics that is embedded in career and technical education (CTE) content. It is a process that
provides the opportunity for math and CTE teacher teams to work together in communities of practice and
to identify where math intersects with CTE concepts and applications. This process leads to the creation
of math-enhanced CTE lessons. The research-based Math-in-CTE model has been shown to have a
significant positive impact on student learning in mathematics.

Participation Details

A maximum of 120 Indiana teachers will participate in Math-in-CTE during the 2010-2011 school year.
That group will be made up of 60 math and CTE teacher teams (1 math teacher paired with 1 CTE
teacher) from 4 CTE program areas, Health Sciences, Automotive Services, Building Trades, and
Agricultural Education, for a total of 30 teachers from each program area.

Teacher teams must consist of one CTE teacher applicant from the program areas listed above and a
Math teacher applicant to be considered. Note: 2 CTE teachers from the same program area and same
general geographical location can be paired with one math teacher for these activities. Math teachers
specializing in the following content areas are recommended for participation: Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and
Geometry, as well as those instructors currently teaching within a CTE program.

Teacher teams accepted into the program will commit to attending 10 days of professional development
as follows:

5 days, summer 2010 – July 12-16 in Indianapolis, IN
2 days, fall 2010 – dates and location TBD
2 days, early spring 2011 – dates and location TBD
1 day, late spring 2011 – date and location TBD

Participating teacher teams will be expected to communicate via email, telephone or in person when
necessary, in between the above sessions for the purpose of providing necessary coaching to CTE
instructors in preparation of presentation of math-related lesson plans.

Participant compensation will include:
        - a stipend in the amount of $1000 per teacher to be paid at the completion of the first
        professional development session in summer 2010;
        - all fees associated with necessary travel, lodging, and accommodations for each session in an
amount not to exceed Indiana State maximums.

Participants must provide a 72-hour notice to IDWD or IDOE if he or she is unable to attend any of the
scheduled workshops. If notice is not received within this timeframe, any charged hotel expenses will be
the responsibility of said participant.

Professional development/growth points and college credit opportunities are will be made available. All
cost associated with obtaining college credits will be the responsibility of individual teachers.

Payment for any necessary substitute will be the responsibility of the participants’ local school districts.

Sustainability

Sustainability and maximization of the effectiveness of this program around the state is an important part
of the initiative. Teacher participants will be expected to assist - as able, allowed and requested by district
regulation and supervision - in the following follow-up activities:
- CTE teachers in the program areas will be given opportunities to form and sustain a community of
practice for instructors in their given program area for the purpose of communication, support and
collaboration (not limited to academic integration). This community of practice will include those CTE
instructors that participated in the Math-in-CTE PD activities as well as those who did not. Structure and
support for these activities will be provided by the State.

- CTE and Math teachers participating in the Math-in-CTE PD will be expected to assist in spreading the
academic integration model and practices to other CTE and Math instructors in their districts in the years
following participation. Structure and support for these activities will be provided by the State.

Applications are due by 5:00 pm, Friday, May 28, 2010. Applications can be found and must be
