                             AUTOMOTIVE SHOP ATTENDANT

Automotive Shop Attendant is responsible for cleaning and maintaining automotive shop areas
and perform other related duties. Incumbent receives supervision from the Lead Equipment
Mechanic and may be assigned to Full-time or Part-time position.

The essential functions described are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive; incumbents
may perform other related work activities.


Employee(s) in this class is responsible for following established methods and procedures in the
application of unskilled manual tasks and use of cleaning tools, equipment and supplies to clean
automotive shop and surrounding areas. Position in this class is distinguished from the Utility
Worker class which may be assigned to perform either custodial duties, public works duties, or
parks duties and may perform both unskilled and semi-skilled work.


   sweep and/or clean garage floors and adjacent areas, including shop break room, shop
    mezzanine, shop locker room, lead mechanic's office, outdoor wash rack area, hazardous
    materials and oil storage areas; clean spills, shop equipment and fuel station equipment;
   empty trash barrel, move worn tires to used tire storage area, and transfer and move oil
    and grease barrels;
   pick up and transport City vehicles, automotive parts and materials to and from vendors,
    and various City facilities;
   respond to road emergencies such as provide fuel, jump start vehicle, etc.;
   assist mechanics in lifting and cleaning automotive and heavy equipment components;
   wash and clean City vehicles and motorized equipment as directed by lead mechanics;
   check fluid levels and tire pressure on City vehicles and motorized equipment as directed
    by lead mechanics;
   record fuel readings and assist with filing fleet records as needed
   may strip, salvage parts and prepare vehicles for auctions;
   perform end-of-day lockup of shop and assigned assets such as vehicle and equipment

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade,
and six months of experience in janitorial and/or service delivery work at garage or service

Licenses or other Requirements: Possession of a valid Class C California driver's.

Knowledges and Abilities

Knowledge of:

automotive nomenclature, tools, equipment, and supplies;
 rules for safe driving
 safety methods and practices in lifting and moving heavy loads and equipment

Ability to:

drive all makes of City vehicles and operate a variety of mobile equipment, including fuel
pumps, battery chargers
 lift and move heavy items up to 49 pounds
 ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
 ability to follow oral and written English instructions
 establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other people
