What’s all the Hoo-Ha?
Sprouting grain in controlled environments is currently receiving a lot of excited attention.
It seems more and more cattle, horse and sheep farmers are looking at alternative feed
methods that are readily available all year round without costing a fortune. But can it really
be done and what’s all the hoo-ha about?

Yes, sprouting grain for animal fodder is proving very viable for farmers.

Here are some reasons why more and more farmers are growing their own fodder:

   • Allows control of fodder production and supply regardless of weather conditions

   • Sprouted grain contains more available protein than unsprouted grain

   • Sprouted grain is far more digestible than unsprouted or crushed grain

   • Greatly increases overall nutritional value

   • Increases overall dry matter making feeding more cost effective
 The Wheel Re-invented
The concept is simple; an easy to manage unit that produces nutritious animal fodder all
year round. And that’s exactly what the ‘Fodder Wheel’ does. So what is the Fodder Wheel,
and how does it work?

The Fodder Wheel is a unit comprising of six growing trays. It is driven by a motor and
gearbox that rotates the wheel (not unlike a ferris wheel).

This Fodder Wheel is housed in a Controlled Environment Room (CER). This allows
operators to be in complete control of critical environmental factors.

Housing the Wheel in a CER ensures ideal sprouting conditions by providing:

   • Perfect growing temperatures for whatever crop

   • Exact watering and moisture conditions for grain growth

   • Light conditions adequate for growth

   • Protection from conditions detrimental to growth

The Wheel housed in the Controlled Environment Room rotates periodically (connected
to a PLC timer) to pass the trays through a fine water spraying system (also on automatic
timers). The rotation of the trays also means that users can ensure the trays are at perfect
working height. These trays hold up to 15kg of grain. As the grain sprouts, the weight rapidly
multiplies (up to 6 times) and the wheel begins to grow nutritious fodder all day, every day.
         Can a Fodder Wheel Help?

The Wheels are modular in design. This means that Fodder Wheel units can be set up to suit your
specific requirements. Standard designs start from a 12 tray unit producing around 125 Kg of fodder
per day up to a 96 tray unit that will produce around a tonne of fresh green fodder every day.

MACFAB will fully assemble your new Fodder Wheel. There are three requirements for getting
started; a concrete slab (slab plan available upon request), single phase power, and water to the
slab. Once you have these things you’re right to start!
