Definition of Terms Valuation Measures Market Cap: The total dollar value of all outstanding shares. Computed as shares times current market price. Capitalization is a measure of corporate size. Price To Earnings Ratio: Calculated by dividing the current Price by the sum of the Primary Earnings Per Share from continuing operations BEFORE Extraordinary Items and Accounting Changes over the last 4 quarters. Price To Sales Ratio: Current Price divided by the Sales Per Share for the trailing 12 months. If there is a preliminary earnings announcement for a quarter that has recently ended, the revenue (sales) values from this announcement will be used in calculating the trailing 12 month revenue per share. See Enterprise Value/Revenue. PEG Ratio: Forward-looking measure rather than typical earnings growth measures, which look back in time (historical). Used to measure a stock's valuation against its projected growth rate. Calculated as P/E Ratio divided by 5-yr expected growth rate. Enterprise Value/Revenue: Firm value compared against Revenues. Provides a more rigorous comparison than Price/Sales by removing the effects of capitalization from both sides of the ratio. Since Revenue is unaffected by the interest income/expense line item, the appropriate value comparison should also remove the effects of capitalization, as EV does.
