Reserve your space in these high-quality books! 7 Small Beginnings, Big Results, Changing Future This year’s U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored 13th Diesel Engine-Efficiency & Emissions Research (DEER) Conference, like its predecessors, serves as a showcase for clean-diesel research and development triumphs as well as a peek into evolutionary and even revolutionary technology developments. By Jack Peckham, Executive Editor, Diesel Fuel News he latest edition of the conference is also a reminder of how far joint government/industry clean-diesel research and development (R&D) has come since DEER’s beginnings at University of California-San Diego in 1993, where newcomers might have wondered whether they had wandered into a post-graduate science workshop. Early DEER was heavy on fundamental science, progress reports from lab experiments and statistical analysis. As conference chair and DEER founder John Fairbanks explained, the DEER conference – and the government/industry R&D that revolve around DEER – always had cutting-edge, high-risk technology R&D at its core. Only in more recent years has it included reports on technologies on the brink of commercialization. “Initially, we focused on emissions compliance in a workshop format,” Fairbanks said. “We got the national labs to give ‘real-time’ papers on work-in-progress,” rather than relatively stale reports on completed research, as happens at some technical conferences. The first DEER session also made headlines – on the front page of the New York Times – with first public revelations of the Harvard “six-cities” study on health threats caused by diesel emissions, Fairbanks recalled. That study was to become a cornerstone upon which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) eventually built the world’s toughest regulations on diesel emissions. Since then, DEER has evolved to include work-inprogress R&D results on advanced engines and power systems, discussions on fuels issues, emissions control research, new health-effects research and lively discussions on diesel’s relative toxicity. It also serves as a forum where industry, health researchers, environmental public-interest groups, U.S. national laboratory and university research experts get to know each other better. It’s also a chance for industry to show off its latest vehicle, engine and exhaust emissions control technology, in the popular diesel “ride and drive” sessions. Beyond “ride and drives,” the R&D part of DEER usually includes reports from DOE-affiliated government labs and university centers, which have significant research capabilities and specialists that private industry cannot afford on its own. Getting industry to exploit those lab capabilities has required special efforts throughout the years. Recalling the early days of DEER-related research, Fairbanks credited Battelle researcher Jim Patten for helping to jump-start industry/government R&D dialogue. By Jack Peckham, Executive Editor, Diesel Fuel News F rom its early days at University of CaliforniaSan Diego, then later in Castine, Maine, and still later alternating between Coronado Island and various East Coast ports, the DEER Conference has evolved to become one of the world’s most prestigious technical conferences on diesel emissions, automotive efficiency, public/environmental health issues and cutting-edge technology. Organized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and enjoying the partnership of major diesel engine/automakers, DEER is described as the “primary mechanism for the public exchange of state-of-the-art clean diesel research and development (R&D).” Along with dozens of formal speeches as well See PREVIEW continued on page 4 >> Show Papers Hart’s skilled team of reporters and designers provides on-site daily coverage of key industry events and conferences and delivers professional showpapers – a unique opportunity for advertisers to target specific audiences. 2009 FUEL RATES (Net) Frequency 1x 4x 2 page spread $9,850 $8,900 1-page $5,900 $5,300 1/2-page $3,950 $3,600 1/4-page $2,950 $2,600 Special reports available on individual basis at Inside Front Inside Back Back cover $8,500 $6,900 $8,950 6x (includes specials) $8,400 $5,000 $3,400 $2,400 a premium.
