October 2007 Newsletter
TIME & PLACE: Our October meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 10 from 11:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Fire District Station 1 (8800 NE Hazel Dell Avenue) in the truck bay. SPEAKER/PROGRAM: This is the FUN one! October is our fire safety poster contest meeting. This means the elementary school participants in the annual Fire District Fire Prevention Poster Contest, their families, art teachers and school principals will be joining us for lunch. This year’s judging was again a difficult task as we had so many excellent entries depicting this year’s theme: Practice Your Escape Plan. Students from the eight local elementary schools in grades 3, 4 and 5 submitted their artistic versions of the fire prevention theme. Each year Chief Leah Edwards presents the contest to the school art teachers to encourage participation and each year she solicits excellent response. We would like to thank all the judges for their time and effort in making the selections. They are Barbara Bell, Jeanne Hinds, Casey Collins, Milada Allen, Paul Montague, Debbie Schlinkmeier, Jamie Allen, Dee Memering, and Ila Stanek.
CATERER: Member restaurant Dickinson NW/KFC will cater our lunch. The cost for lunch is $8.50. The ice cream is being provided by Smokey’s Pizza. Please make checks payable to “HDSCBA” – Thank you.
Hello Everyone,
THE PRESIDENT’S PLACE
Our October meeting is always a fun one. It is the annual awards lunch for the Fire District's Youth Poster Contest. It is important to recognize the accomplishments of our community’s youth so I hope you can be there to help show our support. There are usually a good number of elected officials in attendance at this lunch so a strong showing of our members helps raise our political clout too. It is what I call a "dual purpose" meeting. A bit of news you may have heard about is the County’s lifting of the building moratorium. This is a positive step for both new development and also redevelopment of our neighborhoods. One negative that has come out of this process is the raise in the TIF's or Traffic Impact Fees. They have now doubled. It will be interesting to see how this affects new projects in our area. See you all Wednesday, October 10th, at the Fire Station on Hazel Dell Avenue.
