More airport codes now available in .aero February 16, 2006 – The Dot Aero Council (DAC) has recommended the registration of a domain name matching a three character assigned FAA location code on the same conditions as IATA-assigned three letter location codes. These codes have now been reserved for the exclusive use of the assigned code holder, alongside those of IATA. This most recent .aero policy decision ensures that complete sets of industry codes will be available in .aero to work as a coherent structure that is wholly predictable. Supporting the development activities of .aero as it helps the aviation community build a naming structure and a set of communication standards and technologies in the .aero structure to develop Internet-based applications. Now any airport using three character codes assigned by IATA or the FAA can request approval to register the assigned code as a domain name from SITA (as operators of the .aero TLD it is our responsibility to ensure conformity with the policy). This request process will result in SITA assigning a domain authorization ID, which is a prerequisite for registration of a reserved domain name. With this ID in hand, the airport can then register their domain name through the normal channel – via an authorized .aero registrar. The Registrant must be an operator of an airport with a location code assigned to it by IATA or FAA. At times, reserved codes may conflict such as an overlap between an IATA or FAA 3-letter assigned code, in these situations the first-come first-served rule applies. Further information can be found by visiting the .aero domain page at www.information.aero. .aero announces enhanced registration process, reduced registration fees February 23 , 2006 – .aero, the top level domain of the aviation industry, today announced changes to its registration process and reductions to registration fees Following the successful transition of registry services to Afilias, the new registry operator for .aero, the domain announced a number of enhancements to its name registration process. Including reducing the time taken to register a domain name to less than 5 minutes due to the new .aero registry delivering DNS speed resolutions. The .aero registry now operates on the world-standard Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP).This upgrade to EPP allows increased flexibility, standardization, and access to a broader distribution channel of ICANN-accredited registrars which in turn will lead to a reduction in the price of domain name registration – retail price for domain name registration can now be as low as 45 euros. “By switching to our new registry operator not only have we have ensured that significant technical improvements to the .aero domain were introduced, but we have also been able to continue to improve the name registration process that we can offer .aero registrants” said Marie Zitkova Head of .aero. A new online tool has been implemented that allows potential .aero domain name registrants to apply for their .aero ID and subsequently manage it in a simple and expedient manner. The .aero ID is a prerequisite for registering .aero domain names, and is issued as part of a unique validation process that screens potential domain registrants thus ensuring the integrity and the exclusivity of the .aero domain. A new registration process for reserved domain names was also introduced that is more secure and easier for registrars to process, whilst ensuring that only the only the industry code holder may lay claim to the reserved name. Further information can be found by visiting the .aero registration page at www.information.aero. SITA introduces new .aero policy to protect names of states, provinces and geographical areas April 4, 2006 – SITA , the sponsor of .aero, is announcing new additions to list of reserved domain names, and suspension or registration of all sub-domains other than airline.aero and airport.aero. Following the recommendation of the Dot Aero Council (DAC), SITA has introduced a new .aero policy reserving domain names relating to states, provinces and geographical areas, effectively removing these as registration options. These names join the existing list of reserved country names. Names that had already been registered at the time the new policy came into force will automatically become reserved as soon they expire (un-renewed) or are deleted by the current registrant. The new policy ensures that the .aero TLD continues to manage the standardization of naming schemes within .aero to the benefit and use of the community as a whole. The DAC has also upheld the recommendation that all registration in subdomains other than airline.aero and airport.aero remain suspended. In addition, they endorsed SITA's proposal to modify the current policy so that sub domains remain assigned to their current registrant groups whilst specific registration rules of sub domains are being defined. The new policy will be published in the revised Domain Management Policy document, effective April 3, 2006, and can be found at www.information.aero, where a full list of reserved domain names may also be viewed. As a community initiative, members of the aviation community who would like to see a change in policy or would like to propose a new policy can make such a request to their sector representative on the DAC, or directly to SITA. Further information can be found by visiting, the .aero domain policy page at www.information.aero.
