In the field of Electronics and Computer Engineering in the VIN^A Institute of Nu-
clear Sciences during the year of 2002 the main research/development work that was
carried out is:
In the area of Nuclear Instrumentation the focus was:
          – on the development of generalized and optimized moving average algo-
             rithms for digital ratemeters, statistical fluctuaction suppression algorithm
             in preset count digital ratemeters,
          – on the development and application of Field Programmable Gate Array
             (FPGA) technology in digital gamma-ray spectroscopy,
          – on the reconstruction of the Whole Body Counting System in the Medical
             Radiation Protection Department in the VIN^A Institute of Nuclear Sci-
             ences,
          – on the research and development of universal intelligent GM transmitter
             for background ionizing radiation monitoring,
In the area of instrumentation and aparatus examinations in hazardous and explosive
zones the main interests were:
          – comparison of test criteria for examinations of instrumentation and
             aparatus in explosive areas,
          – the achievements in the development of domestic equipment,
          – the overview of the examinations made in the CENEx from 1994 to 2002
             and experiences drawn from that period,
In the area of Computer Engineering the main scope of research was:
          – development of information exchange amoung computers using modern
             Client-Server Architecture in the distributed measurement systems envi-
             ronment,
          – considerations of the limits of using the WIPL-D Code,

Apart from scientific and research activities the electronics and computer engineering
laboratories were highly involved in the design and development of modern optical
primary computer network in the VIN^A Intitute of Nuclear Sciences.

              DIGITAL GAMMA-RAY SPECTROSCOPY BASED ON FPGA TECHNOLOGY

A digital pulse processing system convenient for high rate gamma-ray spectroscopy with NaI(Tl) detectors
has been designed. The new programmable logic device has been used for implementation of dedicated
high-speed pulse processor, as the central part of the system. The processor is capable to operate at the
speed of fast ADC, preserving maximum throughput of the system. Special care has been taken to reduce
the distrortion of energy spectrum caused by pile-up at high count rates. The developed system is highly
felxible, and the parameters of its operation can be changed in software. The performance of the system was
tested for high counting rate of 400 000 s-1.

    A GENERALIZATION OF THE PRESET COUNT MOVING AVERAGE ALGORITHM FOR
                            DIGITAL RATE METERS

A new generalized definition of the preset count-moving average algorithm for digital ratemeters has been
introduced. It allows identification of a number of different versions of this type of algorithm suitable for
implementation in microprocessor-controlled digital ratemeters or in PC-supported count-rate measur-
ing/monitoring systems. The steady-state and transient regimes of the algorithm have been characterized. A
measure for statistical fluctuations of the successive measurement results has been introduced. The versatil-
ity of the generalized algorithm indicates its suitability for application in the design of the software of mod-
ern measuring/control digital systems.

         A SOFTWARE METHOD FOR SUPPRESSING STATISTICAL FLUCTUACTIONS IN
                   PRESET COUNT DIGITAL RATEMETERS ALGORITHM

A method for suppression of statistical fluctuations of the mean count rate measurements based on limiting
the time difference between two adjacent input pulses to a pre-assigned range, has been incorporated in the
preset count digital ratemeter algorithm. The algorithm allows measurement of mean count rates with con-
siderably lower levels of statistical fluctuations of the measurement results and significantly lower values of
the preset count compared to the traditional algorithm. The exact relation between the lower and upper lim-
its of the difference between two adjacent pulses has been derived. The lower limit of the preset count appli-
cable to the algorithm has been identified. The response time of the algorithm to a sudden change of count
rate has been determined.
