Attorney General Jerry Brown's letter accepting the Mercury News proposal for the three major gubernatorial candidates to release their federal and state tax returns.
April 21, 2010 Dear Mr. Butler: I am writing to accept your proposal for the three major gubernatorial candidates to release their federal and state tax returns. As you wrote, “If candidates pledge in writing, their word will be on the line, and we believe they'll live up to it. If anyone refuses, then the others will be off the hook — but neither we nor voters will forget who refused.” So now you have my pledge, and I obviously am hopeful that Ms. Whitman and Mr. Poizner will also agree. As you know, shortly after being elected governor in 1974, I did something no governor had done before – I released my tax returns. I have always believed this is important, and today – after revelations of Wall Street manipulation and crimes and an economic meltdown caused by greed and deception – it’s even more important. Under the terms you outlined, I am more than happy to release 10 years of tax returns and to post those returns on www.jerrybrown.org at noon on May 5th. Sincerely, Jerry Brown 291 3rd Street, Oakland, CA 94607 - (t) 510-628-0202 (f) 510-628-0909 ID #1321867 www.JerryBrown.org
