Installation (Windows 32-bit, executable only)
     1. Unzip the biodiverse directory onto your hard drive. This help file will assume you have placed
        it in C:\Biodiverse, but it can go anywhere on the file system.

     2. Download and install Gtk+ Runtime Environment for Windows 2.12.9-2 from
        http://gladewin32.sourceforge.net/. Use the default options provided during setup, unless you
        know what you are doing.

Bioodiverse can be started by double clicking on the BiodiverseGUI_win.exe file.

If you want to keep the log then open a command prompt and run
       C:\Biodiverse\bin\BiodiverseGUI_win.exe

If the biodiverse bin folder is in your PATH then omit the full path and just type
        BiodiverseGUI_win.exe

You can associate *.bps and *.bpy files with the BiodiverseGUI_win.exe file if you want to double
click on a Biodiverse project file to open it.
Installation (Windows 32-bit, including the source code)

  1. Unzip the biodiverse directory onto your hard drive. This help file will assume you have placed
     it in C:\Biodiverse, but it can go anywhere on the file system.

  2. Download and install Perl 5.8.925 from http://downloads.activestate.com/ActivePerl/Windows/
     5.8/ActivePerl-5.8.9.825-MSWin32-x86-288577.zip .

  3. Download and install Gtk+ Runtime Environment for Windows 2.12.9-2 from
     http://gladewin32.sourceforge.net/. Use the default options provided during setup (unless, of
     course, you know what you are doing).

  4. Edit your system's PATH environment variable to include C:\Biodiverse\bin (or whichever path
     you unzipped the Biodiverse files into).

  5. Once that's done, copy and paste the following commands into a command window. These
     install additional perl libraries needed by Biodiverse. Note that this assumes you don't already
     have ppm repositories defined. If you do then disable the trouchelle repository for the first
     three sets, as its gtk libs don't install properly (when last I checked).

             ppm install Pod-Simple
             ppm install PadWalker

             ppm repo add http://voltar.org/active/5.8
             ppm install http://voltar.org/active/5.8/Gtk2.ppd

             ppm repo add http://www.biodiverse.unsw.edu.au/ppm
             ppm install http://www.biodiverse.unsw.edu.au/ppm/Geo-Shapelib.ppd
             ppm install http://www.biodiverse.unsw.edu.au/ppm/Gnome2-Canvas.ppd
             ppm install http://www.biodiverse.unsw.edu.au/ppm/Statistics-Descriptive2.ppd
             ppm install http://www.biodiverse.unsw.edu.au/ppm/Gtk2-GladeXML.ppd

             ppm repo add http://trouchelle.com/ppm/
             ppm install Data-DumpXML
             ppm install Math-Random-MT-Auto
             ppm install Devel-Symdump
             ppm install Text-CSV_XS
             ppm install DBD-XBase
             ppm install IO-Stringy
             ppm install HTML-QuickTable
             ppm install YAML-Syck
             ppm install Data-Structure-Util

  6. You should now be able to run Biodiverse by executing C:\Biodiverse\bin\BiodiverseGUI.bat.

  7. You can associate *.bps and *.bpy files with the BiodiverseGUI.bat file if you want to double
       click on a Biodiverse project file to open it.

Linux/UNIX (including the source code)
These instructions are vague as we have not fully tested them.

Install GTK using the standard methods (no I don't know what they are on this platform). Make sure
you install Glade as well. Actually, if you install Glade then it should collect all its dependencies,
which includes the rest of GTK.
Linux probably comes with Perl. If so then install all the modules above using the CPAN tool that
comes with Perl. Additional modules will need to be installed, but we have not developed a list of
which ones they are. Apart from Gtk2::Glade lib, the only suggestion is to run Biodiverse and install
the modules it fails on not finding. This will take a few gpoes to get everything. Make sure you install
dependencies to save time installing further modules.

Please let us know if you succeed with this so we can document it.

Macintosh (including the source code)
Any help with the native Mac installation is appreciated.

We have partially tested the MacPorts approach. This isa UNIX layer on top of the Mac, so the Linux/
UNIX instructions are likely to be similar to these.

   1. Install MacPorts and make sure you take ownership of the /opt folder and all of its enclosed
      folders. http://www.macports.org/

   2. Install the following ports:

              gtk2
              p5-gtk2
              p5-gtk2-gladexml
              p5-gnome2-canvas
              p5-yaml-syck

   3. Install the following perl libraries using the "cpan" program that comes with perl (it should be
      possible to copy and paste the whole set of commands, but do it one at a time in case there are
      error messages).

              /opt/local/bin/cpan
              install Data::DumpXML
              install Math::Random::MT::Auto
              install Devel::Symdump
              install Pod::Simple
              install Text::CSV_XS
              install DBD::XBase
              install IO::Stringy
              install Win32::API
          install HTML::QuickTable
          install Geo::Shapelib
          install YAML::Syck
          install PadWalker

          # Anything else that perl complains about when running Biodiverse should
          # be installed using the cpan method.

          # these external libraries might or might not be needed as they should be collected
          through MacPort dependencies.

          Cairo
          Geo::Shapelib
          Glib
          Gnome2::Canvas
          Gtk2::GladeXML
          Gtk2

          # this should be part of the biodiverse distrinution.

          Statistics-Descriptive2

4. To run Biodiverse using this system type this command in the Biodiverse/bin folder in an
   xterm:

          /opt/local/bin/perl BiodiverseGUI.pl

   You can dispense with the /opt/local/bin if it is the first perl in the path. To check if it is, type:

          which perl
