Deception! It is the intentional distortion of the truth in
order to mislead you. Sometimes potential employees
deceived an employer by padding their work
experience on the application in order to get the job.
Sometimes spouses deceive their mates by minimizing
how much they actually spent at the store. Sometimes
our precious children deceive their parents by denying
that they have homework when they know good and
well they do.

And the Master of Deception is Satan himself. He
deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden and he has been
deceiving countless people ever since. And yes, Satan
deceives you and me as Christians!

And maybe I am like the Apostle Paul in this one way-
it wounded his soul and it wounds my soul when I see
believers being led astray from their faith by believing
the lies of the devil.

And so this morning I want to share with you the truth.
I don’t want to tickle your ears today or make you
laugh or feel good about yourself for when you leave

church. Instead I want to hit you with the truth because
it is after all the truth that will set you free. You see I
believe so many Christians are in bondage because
they have believed the lies of the devil. I believe that
so many Christians don’t have the time or the energy
to devote to Christ because Satan has got us so bound
up in this world by his deception.

If you have your Bibles turn with me to:

2 Corinthians 11:1-3 (NIV)
I hope you will put up with a little of my
foolishness; but you are already doing that.
I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I
promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I
might present you as a pure virgin to him.
But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by
the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow
be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion
to Christ.

1. I do not want you to be deceived you and I are
under attack.

2 Corinthians 11:3 (NIV) 3 But I am afraid that
just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's
cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray
from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

A. Eve was attacked by Satan in the Garden of Eden.
Paul is warning the Corinthian Church that they were
under attack by Satan. And I have got to warn you as
pastor of this church that we are under attack.

B. Paul is telling the Corinthian Church that they are
under attack. They aren’t even what I would call a
great church. There is all kind of division and strife in
this church. There is the issue of tongues that has
created a rift in the church. There is immorality in the
church for which someone has to come under church
discipline and there are people dying because they are
taking the Lord’s Supper in an unworthy matter.

C. And if the Apostle Paul is sayings by the divine
inspiration of the Holy Spirit that the Corinthian Church
is under attack then I am going to tell you that Bala
Chitto is under attack by Satan.

D. If you open your spiritual eyes you can see it. Our
homes are under attack and if our homes are under
attack it is going to spill into the church. I wonder how
much pain and suffering that Debra Smith’s family is
going to have to endure. I wonder how long Bobby is
going to linger in pain before God takes him home. I
wonder how well our kids are going to be able to
handle that their parents are divorced. I wonder how
many jobs are going to be enough to make ends meet
for some of our families.

2. Not only are we under attack, but all the
resources of hell are gathered against us.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the
devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking
for someone to devour.

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world and against
the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

A. What I see in the world today is Christians getting
beaten down. We may put up a good fight for a while
but then we just get tired and give up. You see we are
not just fighting Satan we are fighting all the forces of
hell itself.

B. Let me give you some facts. Ken Sande of
Peacemaker Ministries in an article entitled article,
"Strike the Shepherd", reports that every month*,
1,500 pastors in the USA leave their assignments
because of conflict, burnout or moral failure. If you do
the math, ministers are leaving the church at a rate of
50 per day.

Sande also reports that one study showed that the
average seminary graduate spends only 14 years
pastoring before he changes careers.

C. And what about the ordinary church member.
According to a study by Lifeway Research, 59 percent
of them that leave the church do so because of

"changes in life situation." And if you look closely into
what makes up these change in life situations you will
discover that the top two categories are simply got too
busy to attend church and family/home responsibilities
prevented church attendance.

D. It is just another way of saying that they burned out,
got tired of fighting all those battles, and chose to put
their energies elsewhere.

E. It is not salvation that we have a problem with; it is
life that we have the struggle with.

3. Not only are we under attack, and all the
resources of hell are gathered against us but their
mission is a simple one: put something else in
your life to compete against Christ.

2 Corinthians 11:2 (NIV)
I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I
promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I
might present you as a pure virgin to him.

A. Why do people get jealous? The answer is simple: it
is because they have competition. A man is trying to
win the affections of a woman toward him. He
discovers that some other man is also interested in the
woman and so he becomes jealous because He has
competition in winning that woman’s affection.

B. When we come to Jesus in salvation we are saying
that we present ourselves completely to you. We are

singularly devoted to you. But over time things get in
our way and before long Jesus is competing with so
many other things for our attention.

C. And that is what the devil and the forces of hell are
good at. They throw things in our way so that God has
to compete with them. They know if God has to
compete with something else, more often than not,
God will lose out.

D. You look at how busy your life is- the devil and the
forces of hell have something to do with that. You look
at what competes with God on Sunday morning and
the devil and the forces of hell are behind it. They don’t
have to destroy the Christian to get victory they just
need to sidetrack the Christian. They just need
something else to compete against God.

4. We under attack and all the resources of hell are
gathered against us and their mission is simple,
put something to compete with Christ, but all the
resources of heaven are gathered on our side to
win the battle.

1 John 4:4 (NIV)
You, dear children, are from God and have
overcome them, because the one who is in you is
greater than the one who is in the world.

1 Corinthians 15:57 (NIV)
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:11-13 (NIV)
being strengthened with all power according to
his glorious might so that you may have great
endurance and patience, and joyfully
giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified
you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the
kingdom of light.
For he has rescued us from the dominion of
darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the
Son he loves,

A. We as Christians don’t need to lose any battles to
Satan and his demons. God has given us His
resources to be victorious.

B. If you feel beaten down in your Christian life you are
letting Satan win a battle that he has no right to win in
your life.

C. Today if you are spiritually tired I invite you to altar
to talk with God and if you wait upon Him, He will
renew your strength.

Isaiah 40:30-31 (NIV)
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young
men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the LORD will renew
their strength. They will soar on wings like
eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they
will walk and not be faint.

D. We are under attack by Satan and all the resources
of Satan are against us but God will get the victory. Do
you believe that?

Let us pray!
