BSA TROOP 804 MILLERSVILLE, MD PROGRAM: T804's outdoor and advancement program has an emphasis on having fun. Monthly themes are coordinated by an adult facilitator and are woven into both troop meetings and outings. In most cases, the themes are merit badge related, providing opportunities for Scouts to learn new skills, uncover unrealized interests and make progress towards advancement. T804 strives to ensure that the unit is Scout-led and there is active participation in Junior Leader Training, both at the unit level as well as broader opportunities, such as Green Blaze. Planning for the year and monthly themes is done by the Scouts with cooperation of the Troop Committee. OUTDOOR PROGRAM: There is a monthly outing, usually a campout and T804 tries to “camp no place twice” (at some point, we will recycle!) We go to summer camp at BSA summer camps in the nearby area (however in 2006, we went up to New York, 7 hours away, for summer camp). We have members who have been to the National Jamboree and in 2007, a contingent is attending the Canadian National Jamboree (their 100th anniversary). ADVANCEMENT: T804 has a strong advancement program and encourages all Scouts to seek Eagle. Scouts in leadership positions take the initiative to teach younger Scouts the basic skills and help them achieve First Class. Merit badges, in addition to being offered monthly in conjunction with themes, are also available through Scouts’ own initiative. T804 has merit badge counselors for all Eagle required merit badges as well as many more. MEETINGS/LOCATION: T804 meets year-round at Historic Baldwin Hall, at the intersection of Millersville Road and Old General’s Highway on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Our Chartering Organization is the Severn Crossroads Foundation, the non-profit organization that owns and operates Historic Baldwin Hall. SUPPORT: FUNDING: T804 raises funds for the program by participating in the annual BSA Popcorn Sale as well as selling fresh grapefruit and oranges direct from Florida. Other fund-raising opportunities may be made use of as circumstances arise or permit. ADULT LEADERSHIP: T804 has an extremely active parents group and all parents should consider contributing in some fashion - many hands make light work. We are fortunate to have 4 Eagle Scouts among these parents, with a total of over 100 years of experience in the program.
