The Unrepentant Criminal Every Man At One Time Ephesians 2:1-5 NCV In the past you were spiritually dead because of your sins and the things you did against God. 2Yes, in the past you lived the way the world lives, following the ruler of the evil powers that are above the earth. That same spirit is now working in those who refuse to obey God. 3In the past all of us lived like them, trying to please our sinful selves and doing all the things our bodies and minds wanted. We should have suffered God’s anger because of the way we were. We were the same as all other people. 4But God’s mercy is great, and he loved us very much…. Ephesians 2:5-10 NCV But God’s mercy is great, and he loved us very much. 5Though we were spiritually dead because of the things we did against God, he gave us new life with Christ. You have been saved by God’s grace. 6And he raised us up with Christ and gave us a seat with him in the heavens. He did this for those in Christ Jesus 7so that for all future time he could show the very great riches of his grace by being kind to us in Christ Jesus. 8I mean that you have been saved by grace through believing. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. 9It was not the result of your own efforts, so you cannot brag about it. 10God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing. To that Job… I am defined by God’s UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, not by my PERFORMANCE! Evidence of the Resurrection! Colossians 3:12-14 NASB So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Jeremiah 17:9 NLT “The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? 10But I know! I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” Hebrews 11:3 GWT Faith convinces us that God created the world through his word. This means what can be seen was made by something that could not be seen. Romans 4:16-22 NIV He [Abraham] is our father in the sight of God, in whom he [Abraham] believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were. 18Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 19Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” John 11:43-44 NLT Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44And Lazarus came out, bound in graveclothes… Acts 2:29-32 NLT “Dear brothers, think about this! David wasn’t referring to himself when he spoke these words I have quoted, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us. 30But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on David’s throne as the Messiah. 31David was looking into the future and predicting the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that the Messiah would not be left among the dead and that his body would not rot in the grave. “This prophecy was speaking of Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, and we all are 32 witnesses of this. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8a NLT Now let me remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to 1 you before. You welcomed it then and still do now, for your faith is built on this wonderful message. 2And it is this Good News that saves you if you firmly believe it— unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place. I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to 3 me—that Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 4He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, as the Scriptures said. 5He was seen by Peter and then by the twelve apostles. 6After that, he was seen by more than five hundred of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died by now. 7Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. 8Last of all, I saw him… Acts 1:3 NIV After his suffering, He [Jesus] showed himself to these men and gave many convincing [infallible KJV] proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. Luke 23:32-40 NLT Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33Finally, they 32 came to a place called The Skull. All three were crucified there—Jesus on the center cross, and the two criminals on either side. Jesus said, “Father, forgive these people, because they don’t know what they are 34 doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. The crowd watched, and the leaders laughed and scoffed. “He saved others,” they 35 said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Chosen One, the Messiah.” 36The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. 37They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38A signboard was nailed to the cross above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? 39 Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you are dying? 40 We deserve to die for our evil deeds, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42Then 41 he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” 43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Matthew 27:44 NLT And the criminals who were crucified with him also shouted the same insults at him. Isaiah 53:12 NIV …and was numbered with the transgressors Galatians 2:20 NIV I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
