                                   PRINCIPAL’S ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2005

It is with pleasure I present my tenth annual report to the school community of Rotorua Lakes High
School. Each year we enjoy celebrating our successes for the year and the 2005 year is no
different in terms of the successes we have had.

SCHOOL ROLL

The roll at March 1 2005 was 666(724), a decrease of 58 students from 2004. This roll was made up of:

The roll has dropped in 2005 with a reduction of 58 students from 2004. 20 of these students are
a result of the reduction in fee paying students. The other 38 saw reductions at the senior classes.
A key reason for this reduction is a result of the very buoyant employment market during 2005.

Student Achievement
These results are directly from the NZQA site for Achievement Standards and does not include
results for unit standards. Also, “not achieved” has not been reported by NZQA this year.
Consequently, these tables provide relative percentages for all of the students who have achieved
the standard. In reading these tables, best performance is when excellence is a relative high
percentage and achievement a relative low percentage as compared with the corresponding
National percentages.

The above results demonstrate overall our students who achieved the standard(s) are
performing at a level very similar to students at national levels.
The following tables reflect the number of students achieving NCEA Level 1, 2 & 3 and the
Year level they were at school when this was achieved.

These first 2 tables demonstrate the gaining of a Level 1 or 2 qualification is not a 1 year course
for a number of students. This is a strong indicator students are able to work at their own pace to
achieve an award.

This third table indicates the achievement of a Level 3 award is most likely to occur at Yr 13 and
will be achieved by those students who have gained Level 1 at Yr 11& Level 2 at Yr 12.

Additional to this were:
NZ Scholarship Exams
5 scholarship results Elizabeth Travis (Statistics and Modelling, Chemistry, Biology), Anthony
Acres (English, Geography), Robert Hoare (English), Angela Perks (Geography), Leon Yoshioka
(Japanese).

Elizabeth’s results were outstanding and she was the recipient of an NZQA scholarship award
worth $2000 for 3 years of tertiary education. The other students received $500 per scholarship
for one year.

University Entrance
36 students gained UE - this represented 38.3%of our year 13 students. Nationally 41.3% of
Year 13 students gained UE. If this national result is adjusted to reflect our Year 13 retention the
National % drops to 35%.

Literacy improvement
The improvement in literacy levels of students involved in the school’s literacy programme at
Years 9 & 10 have been encouraging. The full detail of the improvement shown by students is
outlined in the report on achievement targets. Thanks goes to Mrs McLeod for leading the
programme assisted by Mrs Daniels. Special thanks goes to the community helpers who give of
their time to come in to school to work with individual students.

Numeracy Project
A similar programme to the literacy programme has been running for numeracy. Groups of
students have worked with Mrs Kelly to improve their basic skills in mumeracy. Once again there
has been a significant gain in confidence and ability by students involved in the programme. The
programme has had excellent support via Ngati Whakaue Endowment Trust who donated $15,000
towards the programme. There has also been Ministry of Education assistance via some staffing.

Gateway Programme
This was the first year of our school’s involvement in this programme. The school received 40
placements that provided funding to place 40 students at Years 12 and 13 in workplaces of their
interest. Students worked towards gaining credits linked to the industry/business they were
experiencing. Thanks to Mr Nielsen who has set the programme up and developed the
relationships with the workplaces that have allowed our students to be involved in.

Education Outside the Classroom
Camps are held to provide new opportunities for students outside of the classroom.
Year 13 camp was held at Ohope in February focussing on Leadership and goal setting – 3 nights
Year 12 camp was held at Okataina in November focussing on Peer Support – 2 nights
Year 10 camp was held at Okataina Education Centre in May, curriculum based - 2 nights
Year 9 EOTC day at Lake Okareka in March focussing on socialisation and team building – 1 day


Student Area

At Year 13 I wish to pay tribute to Heta Gardiner and Elizabeth Travis as the Head Prefects. They
were excellent to work with and led the student body well. Jeffrey Dowthwaite and Holly Page as
Deputies also supported Heta and Elizabeth extremely well.

Our Rotorua Young Achievers for 2005 were, Heta Gardiner (Leadership, Kaiarahil), Elizabeth
Travis(Leadership, Academic, Rowing), Katie Clark (Academic) Clinton Avery(Mountain biking and
Road Cycling), Bonny-Iris MacDonald(Visual Arts), Holly Page(Leadership, School Involvement

and Community Service) and Jackie Shin(Golf).       Our Daily Post recipients of the Youth in
Excellence award were Elizabeth Travis, Heta Gardiner and Tessa Stevenson

Hariata Ngatai, the student representative on the Board of Trustees and Holly Page and Laura
Fishcer as co-Chair of the School Council, made an invaluable contribution in representing the
student body. Congratulations to Hariata Ngatai who has been re-elected to as student
representative on the BOT as from October 2005.

The rest of the Prefects, House Prefects and School Council members, also made a valuable
contribution, Of particular note were the number of prefects who turned out for the ANZAC
parade.

There were also been many students involved in Stage Challenge, Sports and cultural areas of
Drama, Music speech making and debating, who have gained significantly from their involvement.


Of particular note would be:
    1 gold medal U16 Girls quad, 1 silver medal U18 Girls double, and 1 bronze medal U17
        Girls coxed quad at Maadi Cup at Karapiro. Laura Fischer was involved in every one of
        these crews.
    Jackie Shin – golf for her continued success at regional and national levels
    Annabel Shaw NZ rep in U15 Waterpolo team
    Clinton Avery – selection for the NZ U19 Mountain Biking and Road Cycling Teams to
        attend the World events in France and Italy respectively for the second year in a row
    Winning of the National Boys Mountainbike relay for the 3rd year in a row
    The 120 students who participate in Stage Challenge each year. Our production is solely
        student driven demonstrating the ability of those involved with its organisation how they can
        work as a team.

    Netball teams winning of their section at national tournament

The diversity of the success that students have had is enormous and shows the opportunities that
staff provide for students to achieve at the highest level.

STUDENT BEHAVIOUR
In 2005 62 (40) students were stood down for periods of 1 to 5 days. The 3 predominant areas
being involvement in drugs (including alcohol), verbal abuse of staff and physical assaults on other
students. The significant increase over 2004 standdowns was as a result of alcohol at the Year 10
camp where 16 students were involved in this incident.

There were 20 (7) suspensions, the predominant behaviour causing suspension were serious
assaults, drugs and continual disobedience.

Of the 20 suspended students, 0 were expelled (over 16 years) and 5 were excluded (under 16).
All other students were returned to school under a behaviour contract.

The school continues to implement strategies in an effort to reduce the suspension and standdown
figures.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Laptop Scheme
The Board has continued to support the staff in as part of the Laptop for Secondary Teachers
Programme 45 of our staff now have their own leased laptop to assist them in with
administration, management and to develop new programmes of learning for students using IT.
The cost of being part of the programme is $15,000 a year to the Board.

Staff are at widely differing levels of competency with their laptops but all making progress towards
improving these.

Communications
Communication with parents occurred through 39 school newsletters, 10 Friends of the School
meetings, 2 whanau support huis, 1 new parent evening (March), 3 report evenings( 2 inJune and
1 in October), 2 evenings for prospective parents (August), 1 sports prizegiving (October), 2
academic and cultural prizegivings (November & December), 1 Year 13 Graduation
dinner(December), 2 NCEA information evening (March & July), 1 careers and option selection
evening (September).

Parents receive 2 formal written reports. Parents are also written to 4 times during the year if their
child is either performing above expectations or performing below expectation.

House Group Tutors, Heads of House, Guidance Counsellor, Classroom Teachers, Deans and
Senior Management are in regular contact with families on an ad hoc basis as the need arises.

PROPERTY DEVELOPMENTS
2005 has seen C Block have most of the classrooms upgraded through the school’s cyclical
maintenance programme.

All other work was of a maintenance nature.

General
Thanks goes to Mr Hall and Mrs Painter, my two deputies, for the enormous amount of time and
energy they both put in. Whether it be in the day to day running, meetings or sports involvement,
they are always there to carry out what is necessary.

Thanks to the teaching staff. I am always impressed by their commitment to provide the very best
for our students. The many extra hours given for tuition outside of classes is testimony to staff
wanting to see our students succeed. .

Thanks to the support staff for always being prepared to go that extra mile to ensure that our
students needs are met. Support staff do it willingly and often well beyond the hours they are
paid for and beyond the scope of their job descriptions.


BOARD OF TRUSTEES
To the Board members, I thank you for your support and in particular the expertise you bring to the
role. To Mr Faulkner, thank you for the significant contribution you have made in your year as
Board Chair.

Thanks goes to Mr Oliver and Mrs Whitewood who have resigned as of the end of the year. Their
contribution has been invaluable and I wish them well for the future. An election will need to be
held in the new year to replace them.

To the rest of the Board members, I thank you all on behalf of our community for the commitment
in time you give to our school and to me. It is very much appreciated.

WHANAU SUPPORT & FOTS
The FOTS, make a tremendous contribution to the school in supporting our students. The
Whanau support group had a much lower profile this year and will need to be re-invigorated in
2006.

Thanks goes to the FOTs for their strong support in raising money to assist in purchasing
additional resources for the school. In particular, the annual National Mountain bike relay held in
October was highly successful.

CONCLUSION
2005 was another year in which good progress was made in the areas of student learning, staff
development and property. Each of these areas contribute significantly towards whole school
development.

2006 offers similar challenges as was had for 2005.
 Of key importance to this school are the continuing challenges:
 Continuation of the upgrading of the school’s property.
 Continuation of the focus on raising of student achievement.
 Providing quality professional development to staff to assist with the goal of improving student
     achievement
 Reviewing programmes and ensuring these best meet the students’ needs.
 Maximising the use of IT to assist with the learning of students and move towards being seen
     as the school using technology to its full potential.
 Moving to develop partnerships where education outside the classroom provides context and
     meaning to students.
 Ensuring that our school is seen as the school of choice by all new prospective enrolees –
     particularly in our Eastern suburbs community.

Once again I thank all of those people I have worked closely with.

I look forward to strong progress being made in the coming years.
