WA Youth Awards — Media Reporting
The WA Youth Awards—Media Reporting recognises and rewards excellence in media
reporting of young people and youth issues.
It is part of the WA Youth Awards that focus on young Western Australians aged 13 to 25 years.
The WA Youth Awards acknowledge the role the media play in forming public opinion about
young people and youth issues in our community. The Awards encourage the media to take
a lead by responsibly and realistically reporting on young people and youth issues.

What are the rewards?
• Winners in each category are presented with a trophy and framed certificate at the gala
  awards presentation evening.
• Winners in each category receive a weekend for two people in Margaret River.
• Finalists are presented with a framed certificate at the gala awards presentation evening.
• Finalists receive two complimentary tickets to the gala awards presentation evening.
• A comprehensive publicity campaign is undertaken to ensure winners and their
  organisations receive appropriate recognition.

The categories
Stories about young people and/or youth issues can be entered in the following categories:

• Print media — best news or feature article from a metropolitan newspaper/magazine

• Print media — best news or feature article from a suburban newspaper/magazine

• Print media — best news or feature article from a regional newspaper/magazine

• Television — best news or feature item, metropolitan

• Television — best news or feature item, regional

• Radio — best news or current affairs item

• Photography – best photograph printed in a metropolitan or regional newspaper/magazine



Entering the Awards
Entry criteria
Only media stories published or broadcast between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2005 are eligible.

All media representatives are eligible to enter (ie journalists, editors, photographers etc).

Media representatives can enter their own work.

All articles must relate to young people aged 13 to 25 years living in Western Australia.

Entries from outside Western Australia are not permitted.

All entries must be authorised by a senior editor, unless the journalist is a freelance contributor.

What is the judging process?
The Office for Children and Youth coordinates an independent assessment process.

The judging panel consists of Western Australian media professionals, young people and representatives from
the Office for Children and Youth.

Judges review all entries and select three finalists in each category.

One winner is selected in each category.

Awards will be presented at the gala presentation evening on 6 April 2006.

A special judges’ commendation will be awarded to an entry by a journalist under 25 years of age during the
stipulated period (ie 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2005).

What criteria will the judges use?
The judges will consider the following criteria from the Australian Journalists’ Association
Code of Ethics when assessing and comparing print, television or radio entries:

• Objectivity — independent view, fair

• Balanced comment — fair and reasonable, opportunity to reply

• Technical competence — clear, concise, easy to read, continuity

• Innovation — new approach to subject style, or initiative in sourcing and developing a news story or feature article

• Creativity and originality in presentation

The judges will consider the following criteria when assessing and comparing photographic entries:

• Technical competence

• Innovation — new approach to subject style, or initiative in sourcing a photograph

• Creativity and originality in presentation

How to enter
Answer all questions on the entry form. Please print legibly in the spaces provided.

Entry forms are also available at www.community.wa.gov.au/youngpeople

Please include one copy of the story in the appropriate format: printed or photocopy, VHS video tape, audio
cassette, disc – IBM compatible, or photograph. These copies will not be returned unless specific arrangements
are made.

The copy of the story should be clearly marked with the entrant’s name and story title.
Entries close at 5.00pm on Friday 3 March 2006.
