May is Mental Health Month. The Department of Health and Hospitals-Office of Mental Health, Mental
Health of America in Louisiana and Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health are working together
as a team to make Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week 2008 the most successful week ever!
Please join us throughout the state of LA for an action-packed week dedicated to education, raising awareness
and advocating for children’s mental health. All attached activities are sponsored by the DHH-Office of
Mental Health, Mental Health of America in LA and Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health.

One major area to be emphasized during this week is the 1st Annual Children’s Mental Health
Summit. This summit is scheduled to occur on May 9, 2008. This is the Children’s Mental Health
Week “Culminating Event.” Please join us in our state’s capital for this one action-packed
day dedicated to raising awareness, education, and advocacy for children’s mental health.
The 2008 summit will inform, inspire, and invigorate everyone involved with suicide
prevention—survivors, clinicians, educators, advocates, policy makers and OMH staff.
Annual Summit Activities include:
• A Tool Bag of National Resources will be given to all participants.
• Awareness Event with Statewide Youth Poster / Essay Display & Agency exhibits.
• Youth Panel of Experts and Parent Panel of Experts
• Education and training sessions on child traumatic stress, Psyche First Aid, Hurricane
Preparedness, Engaging Parents, Youth & Service Providers, the latest prevention
research, policy updates, and much, much more.
• Discussions with leaders in the field, including Dr. Rahn Kennedy Bailey, Meharry
Medical College, and Dr. Melissa Brymer, National Child Traumatic Stress Network,
and Dr. Michael Scheeringa, Tulane School of Medicine.

LPYSP will sponsor the 2008 Youth Suicide Prevention Statewide Poster/Essay Contest
and entry deadline date is May 31, 2008.
Tyler MHC Children’s Services & ECSS have permission to decorate the bulletin board
in the lobby area with information about children’s mental health and artwork
completed by the children.
Each participant must pre-register for the annual summit with the LPYSP. The Annual Summit
Registration Form is attached to this letter. Space is limited and registration is on a first come,
first served basis. All registration fees are being paid for by DHH-OMH from the LPYSP-Garret
Lee Smith grant award that is funded by SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services. Please
do not register for this Annual Summit if you think you will not be able to attend. Travel
and meals are on your own. There is no charge for this valuable Summit, and attendees can
earn four continuing education unit hours.
