1. Introduction Letter

        April 2010:

        Dear Students and Parents:

Thank you for considering the SHS Cheerleading Program. High school athletics and activities
can enhance the academic experience and allow individuals to further enhance their skills,
challenge themselves mentally and physically, develop leadership abilities and foster life-long
        friendships.

The SHS Cheer Program exists to support school athletics and to accomplish the programs own
athletic and competitive goals. This can make a cheerleaders life very busy as the student will
have commitments for camp, practice, games, tumbling, and competitions. Individuals trying out
should seriously consider their academic load other sports or activities, jobs or volunteer work,
and family and religious commitments. Even one person missing from a cheer activity can
jeopardizes the squad’s success for the day. However, while the commitment level is demanding
at times, cheerleaders feel a sense of pride and unity cheering for their school and are always
amazed to see their skill level improvement by the end of their competition season.

This is my fifth year as Skyline Cheerleading Program Head and seventh year coaching
competitive cheer and I am excited and ready to continue the journey. Throughout this year, I will
continue to work with both the Silver and Green squads. I also will be hiring a new assistant, but
at the time of writing this letter, he or she has yet to be named. We also utilize the outstanding
talents of the South Elite All Star Program for all our tumbling, camp, and choreography needs.
Additionally, I am also on the board of the Washington State Cheer Coaches Association where I
am the Executive Director of High School Cheer, helping local high school coaches build their
cheer programs, answer questions, and promote cheerleading in Washington State. I am a Head
Performance and Safety Technical Judge and the Co-President and Judges Coordinator for the
Washington State Cheer Coaches Association. I have also coached at the all-star level. Not only
do I work with the cheerleaders at SHS, but I am also a Business and Marketing Teacher with a
Masters in Education and Co-Advisor of the nationally recognized Skyline DECA Program.

This year, I want to continue to raise the spirit level at Skyline High School with more tumbling
and stunting during games, stronger sideline performances and crowd involvement incorporation,
and dynamic assembly performances. Additionally, I want all athletes to feel recognized and
supported by the program. Finally, competitions will be a place where we can exhibit our skills
and work towards a 2011 WIAA State Cheerleading Championship for both squads and a chance
at bettering our national ranking from 2010 (16th currently) with the Green Squad at the 2011
UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida.

I want this to be a positive experience for your family that you will look back and remember
fondly. Please let me know if you have questions at anytime. I look forward to working with you
        and your family.

        Cheers!

        Stephania Lemeshko
        SHS Cheerleading Program Head

                                                        2
II. Program Philosophy

         Skyline Cheer exists to:

                  a. Promote school spirit and recognize high school athletics
                  b. Serve the cheerleaders, the school, and the community
                  c. Instill commitment, time management, and team work
                  d. Develop cheerleading skill and technique
                  e. Challenge the body and mind in competitive venues
                  f. Foster life-long relationships

III. Tryouts (please see tryout packet for detailed information)
I. Eligibility:
         a. Must be a current Skyline student in the Fall of 2010
         b. Must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 with no D’s or F’s.
         c. Grades 10-12th are eligible for either the Green or Silver squads, both of which are varsity
         d. All forms must by submitted by the due date

II. Squad size is determined by the coach and based on the skill and talent of the athletes.

III. Judging
         a. Tryouts are judged by a panel of cheer, dance and gymnastics experts. Coaches facilitate the process
         b. Tryout consists of clinic tryout cheer, tryout dance, original cheer, tumbling, jumps, rallying,
showmanship, and overall impression. Males will be asked to demonstrate co-ed stunting skills. Call
backs can be requested of some cheerleading candidates.
         c. Teacher recommendation scores will also be factored in.
         d. In order to make Green, tumbling is highly recommended but not required. A cheerleader
making Green that does not currently have a round-off back handspring or a standing back
handspring must commit to the coach (contract) that they will obtain those skills. Additionally,
just because a candidate has tumbling, does not mean they will be placed on Green. We are
looking for well rounded cheerleaders for both squads. Returning members of either team for
2009-2010 are not guaranteed their same spot – they have to tryout just like all candidates.
For safety reasons, tumbling skill must be demonstrated to one of the coaches and approved
during clinics in order to be allowed to perform it at tryouts.
         e. All decisions by the judges are final.
         f. The coaches reserve the right to award points to any cheerleader who for a circumstance beyond
their control (i.e. a car accident) is unable to perform a skill they have already proven they have to
one of the Skyline Coaches. In case of an extreme circumstance, we may accept a video tryout.

IV. 2010-2011 Program Schedule and Time Commitments (see page 4 for detailed schedule and also the
calendar as an example from last year)
         a. Attendance and participation at the following events is mandatory
                   i. All practices
                  ii. All games
                 iii. Summer camp
                 iv. Tumbling
                  v. Community Service and Fundraising Activities
                 vi. Bonding Nights
         b. As with other teams and organizations, cheer is a commitment! Inability to commit to these activities
             will result in dismissal.
         c. Absences are only acceptable for illness or prearranged activity with the coach. Absences are not
acceptable for jobs, other school activities, and social occasions.

                                                               3

V. Costs
Cheerleading is expensive and the coaching staff will try to make this program affordable for everyone.
Both teams will have the same uniform. Uniforms will not change every year, but rather every three to four
years, and a piece at a time. However, the coach does reserve the right to change a piece of the uniform if
it did not fit properly when ordered. Also, in 2011-2012 they are discontinuing our basketball shell and will
be changed for the 2011-2012 year. Fundraising is available and cheerleaders can participate to the
minimum level – or go beyond. Cheerleaders are required to sell at minimum two box advertisements to
        cheer at the first game.

VI. Discipline

      a. Tardiness and Absences
Cheerleading is a team sport and with even one member absent, the whole squad suffers. In the
event a cheerleader needs to miss an event the coach must have a parent or guardian email, phone
call, or letter 24 hours in advance of the absence. In order to keep the whole team accountable,
the following individual and team system has been put into place.
                 i. Unexcused Tardiness = 1 + minute late
                         1. Whole team runs ½ a mile for each unexcused tardy during that event
(practice, game, performance, community service, etc.)
                         2. On the 2nd unexcused tardy the individual receives a parent phone call and is
                            suspended for two weeks
                         3. On the 3rd unexcused tardy the individual is dismissed from the squad
                ii. Unexcused Absences
                         1. Whole teams runs 1 mile for each unexcused absence during the event
                         2. On the 2nd unexcused absence the individual receives a parent phone call and
                            is suspended for two weeks
                         3. On the 3rd unexcused absence the individual is dismissed from the squad

      b. Compliance and Attitude
             i. Coaches’ Directions
                    1. The coach has a specific plan for each practice and often has a vision for the
methods used that the cheerleader may not understand, but should always
follow. It is acceptable to ask questions in a respectful way. Swearing,
complaining, and not cooperating are inappropriate behavior examples. This
behavior will result in a parent phone call and a 1 mile individual run.
                    2. On the 2nd parent phone call the individual will be suspended for two weeks
                    3. On the 3rd parent phone call the individual will be dismissed from the squad
            ii. Practice and Game Attire
                    1. At practices cheerleaders should arrive dressed down and ready to go. Hair
should be in a pony tail and absolutely no jewelry should be worn. At games
the cheerleaders should be dressed in the appropriate uniform, hair NEATLY
slicked back, all make-up done and ribbon in. Each individual’s failure to
comply will result in a ½ mile run for the whole team at the following
practice. This includes failure to bring the necessary uniform pieces.
                    2. On the 4th attire violation the individual receives a parent phone call and is
                        suspended for two weeks
                    3. On the 5th attire violation the individual is dismissed from the squad
      c. Academic Progress
             i. Grade Checks
                    1. Coach will check grades every after major grading periods
                    2. If a cheerleader drops below a 2.5 or has a D or an F the individual will be
suspended until the grades have improved and the current grades are verified
                        by the coach.
      d. Drug and Alcohol Abuse
             i. Any reported and documented drug or alcohol incident will result in immediate
                dismissal from the team.

                                                       6
VII. Team Leadership
All leadership positions are based on coach’s discretion. Coach may choose not to have
leadership positions or suspend leadership positions at anytime.

       a. Captains
The team may vote on 2-3 captains for each squad who will be responsible for:
                i. Attending all leadership meetings
ii. Providing feedback from the team
iii. Taking attendance at each event and knowing where squad members are
iv. Call chants, cheers, dances at games and performances
               v. Being the example team members (never late, always prepared, willing to take risks,
fostering positive attitudes and relationships, etc.)
vi. Captains are not intended to and will not replace the coach during practice

       b. Squad Leaders
The squad may vote on 1-2 squad leaders to represent them and who will be responsible for:
                i. Filling in when captains are not available
               ii. Attending all leadership meetings
iii. Providing feedback from the team
iv. Being the example team members (never late, always prepared, willing to take risks,
fostering positive attitudes and relationships, etc.)
               v. Squad leaders are not captains but student picked representatives and a vital part
                   of the leadership team.

       c. Historians
The squad may vote on 1-2 individuals to represent them by creating a squad scrapbook and end
of the year slide show. These individuals will be responsible for:
                 i. Taking pictures at all team events
ii. Creating a 2010-2011 scrap book for the program
iii. Creating an end of the year slide show for the banquet
iv. Update Display Case by the Main Gym
                v. Attending selected leadership meetings

       d. ASB Cheer Liaison
The coach will select 1 individual to represent the whole squad in the ASB class. This individual
       will be responsible for:
                 i. Enrolling in the ASB Leadership Class
ii. Keeping the squad updated on assemblies and other relevant ASB and cheer events
iii. Working to continually improve school spirit
iv. Fostering positive relationships with the ASB
                v. Attending leadership meetings

                                                       7
VIII. Parent Leadership

The Skyline Cheer Program needs parent support to thrive. The first parent meeting will be Wednesday, May 19th at
6:00pm in room 2131. During this time the SHS Cheer Boosters 10-11 will be formed. The program is in need of
individuals willing to take on the following roles and responsibilities outlined below. Even if you do not want to be
an officer, please support the boosters in whatever way you can. We will have smaller committees for different
projects.
