Training environment
Speechly Bircham’s trainees are regarded as a highly valued part of the team. Training contracts
are divided into four six-month seats. Each trainee will be closely supported by a partner or senior
solicitor. Emphasis is given to early responsibility and supervised client contact, providing trainees
with a practical learning environment. Practical experience is further complemented by
comprehensive in-house legal training. Performance reviews are held at the mid point and at the
end of each seat to promote development and ensure trainees achieve their potential.

Summer scheme placements
Places for 2010 (20). Unusually the firm offers a three week summer placement scheme giving students
an extended opportunity to experience the Speechly Bircham culture, sit in a greater number of practice
areas and gain valuable insight into what life in a private practice environment is really like. Feedback is
sought from partners and solicitors on a student’s performance throughout the scheme, together with end
of scheme assessments that include researching and presenting on a current topical issue and undertaking
a psychometric test. However, it is not all work and no play and the summer scheme is punctuated by a
variety of sports and social events. Applications for 2010 summer placements to be submitted by 12
February 2010.

Sponsorship
GDL and LPC fees paid in full together with a maintenance grant.
