  SUSPENSION OF ADMISSIONS AND TERMINATION OF THE UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR
                 AND MINOR IN INTER-AMERICAN STUDIES – UNI

Actions Requested:
Consider UNI’s request to suspend admissions to and terminate the following programs:
    •    undergraduate major in Inter-American Studies;
    • undergraduate minor in Inter-American Studies.

Executive Summary:

The university reports that there are currently no students in either program.
The Council of Provost recommends approval of this request.

Background:
Board of Regents policy (§ 6.17) requires institutions to provide notification when suspending
program admissions and to submit proposals to terminate programs to the Council of Provosts
for review and recommendation to the Education and Student Affairs Committee. Board of
Regents policy (§ 6.17) also requires that programs not be terminated until after the last student
enrolled in the program has completed the program requirements.

There are currently no students in either program. The University seeks to terminate the program
because of greater student interest and support for a program with a Latin American Studies
emphasis. As an alternative to the terminated programs, the university plans to create a Latin
American Studies Minor and/or Certificate in Latin American Studies. The university reports this will
have a greater probability of serving the interests of its students.
