Network Capacity Seminar Friday 28 November 2003 The UK government’s 10 year transport plan and the European Commission’s Transport white paper set targets for substantial increase in the usage of existing rail networks. This tremendous opportunity also constitutes a significant challenge for almost every aspect of the rail system. This seminar explores some of the key challenges and how they might be met. This seminar will explore capacity from a range of perspectives: · Policy, both UK and European · Train operators, both passenger and freight · Existing research · System reliability · Network maintenance The aims of the day are to: · Initiate informed discussion among key stakeholders · Identify caps in the current research · Influence future thinking, policy and activity · Identify areas for further research based on industry needs and aspirations Joining up UK railway research This seminar is one of a series promoted by the Advisory Group on Rail Research and Innovation (AGRRI). Many of the challenges currently facing the railway industry can be addressed through technological development. AGRRI facilitates and promotes this through bringing together the main players in UK railway research.
